Today I ran into two people in the coffee shop who both use Duolingo! :D

I noticed some people speaking Spanish and English and talking about other languages like Japanese. So I asked if they knew about Duolingo, and they did! xD I'm very excited because the last two years, the only people who knew about Duolingo were people who I told. It is only very recently that Duolingo has started finding its way to my town by other means.

Have you met people in the wild who use Duolingo? Share your story ^_^

A girl in my vocational training uses Duolingo, but she's in another class and we just got in touch very recently. She told me "Hey, I started to learn Spanish with Duolingo" and she was blown away after I told her that I'm a mod and course mod here... I also notice that Duolingo becomes more and more popular, even in Germany =)

Yes, it's really starting to pick up speed. If it keeps going, we'll see a higher rate of saturation and it will be a full on multi-cultural, household phenomenon.

I've haven't met anyone that uses it yet, I've told a few folks though.

I plan on getting one of those fancy duolingo t-shirts so if someone's out there they can find me.

Edit: I almost forgot that I was supposed to post a bunny...

I was sitting on the bus last week going home and I saw that the person sitting next to me was learning Turkish using Duolingo. I promptly introduced myself and she was quite surprised indeed.

Also, last year while teaching in Turkish, a lot of my students would ask me if I was the moderator of the Duolingo TR --> EN course (to which I would promptly reply "no" because they had no idea that I knew Turkish!).

I've created a version of my icon that includes half background of the transgender flag. I'll make sure to wear it from time to time. If you ever do decide to use the trans flag as your icon and anyone harasses you for it, please contact a moderator. Harassment is taken very seriously on Duolingo. :)

Before reading this comment I also didn't know the flag. I googled the tricolor to try and find it for myself. Interestingly, I found that there is a small town of about 3.5k people in Colombia called Murulanda that shares this flag with the genderqueers of the world. Fun fact.

Oh wow! I didn't know that!

I use the flag for my icon so when other GQ folks come to the website, they'll know they aren't alone and that they are welcome here. I've had quite a few other GQ people message me because they've seen the flag. If only my Duo T-shirt were as successful. I wore it the two days ago and nothing. Wish I had waited one more day. I think the person I talked to would have recognized the little Duo, since they are on both the app and the website.

I know several people who know of or tried Duolingo without my prompting, but nobody who really uses it.

I was sitting on a train one day and heard a familiar chime behind me, only to discover that the woman in the next seat was learning English from Spanish.

I was needing some assistance with a research paper for college, and the writing tutor at my college mentioned briefly that he was learning Turkish, I quickly shared my interest in the language and recommend Duolingo only to discover that he was already on it. Long story short, he is the only writing tutor I will go to now. :D

I also gave a persuasive speech on why you should learn a second language and I recommended Duo in it. My classmate came to me a couple weeks later and told me about how much her family loved learning Irish together, especially since it was their grandmother's native language! :D

I've had a long-time friend who loves French and wants to be a missionary there someday. We were talking about French, and we are both homeschooled, so I asked her what curriculum she used, and she said she was using 'this website called Duolingo.' And I just sat there for a minute with my mouth open. We had found Duolingo at almost the same time and were both on level 5 at the time. She has sadly gone inactive and we don't see each other much anymore, but it was nice to see more Duo-ers :)

I was very nervous too! But, the words just came tumbling out of my mouth. It was a surprise to me because I haven't been practicing Spanish much lately as I've been focusing on others. They seemed nice though. I didn't get to say much to them though, as they had a friend there and I didn't want to interrupt their conversation anymore.

The truth is, you know much more than you can easily articulate verbally, because most of your practice has been focused on honing your reading, writing and listening skills.

Speaking is, naturally, the next step, and therefore the true key that will connect you with millions of other Spanish speakers worldwide.

Unfortunately I have yet to meet another duolingo user. However, I have introduced somewhere around ten people to duolingo. I feel like a duolingo group would be a great addition to the local library programs, though I am not sure exactly what would take place at meetings.

I use to never meet other Duolingo users except my friends but then one day in school I was sitting in the back of the classroom and to my suprise I saw some kids on Duolingo. For some reason there is a Swedish phase going through my school so everyone is learning Swedish. It is now like a thing at my school where everyone goes on Duolingo instead of doing their schoolwork.

I was once using Duolingo in a party my relatives made... Until my cousin came and said "You use Duolingo??" I said "Yeah, why?" and she said "Because I do too." I stared at her for a moment, and then searched her up and added her. She said "You have 359 lingots!?!? My friend thinks she's good with only 64!"

I've actually run into quite a few people who use it or know of it (and most of my friends use it, though we generally found out through each other).

My wildest story, though, is finding out that one of the Argentinians I was sharing a hostel room with in Madrid was learning English on it.

I was working at the university bookstore when I met a couple of people who use Duolingo, one was learning Italian while the other was learning French. They told me that they were using it while taking classes in their respective languages. It was because of them that I found out about Duolingo. I haven't met other Duolingo users ever since.

I rarely meet language enthusiasts (I rarely talk to new people), but when I do, somehow they're quite normal, like "yeah, I've studied Spanish from Duolingo" and stuff and I'm like hwo are you not excited while mentioning it!? I guess Duolingo is like obligatory for us.

In a recent Slovak lesson, I was struggling to come up with a Slovak word and I said the Turkish one instead - and she translated it into Slovak for me.

So I asked her whether she knew Turkish and we had a short discussion of how I learned it (mostly Duolingo).

I asked her whether she knew Duolingo and she said she did and had learned some German on it, but hadn't used it for quite a while. She says that if an app is not on her phone's home screen, she tends to forget about it. But she put it onto her home screen during our session (and showed me the screen :D) so perhaps she'll be using Duolingo more often from now on :)

I recently met a refugee on a tram here who used the DL course English to German on his phone, but he told me it was difficult as his command of English was limited as well. I told him that some people were working in the background for an Arabic to German course, but I couldn't provide him with more information if and when such course would be available. Well, anyways, we had a small chat about the wonderful opportunities an app / website such as DL offers for people resettling to another country.

I was very surprised to find that some of my personal close friends had been using Duolingo to practice their French skills. I almost felt betrayed that these people used this website that I cherish and that I didn't know about it! Now, in tandem with one of them, I am learning Portuguese. I'm glad you told the language professors about it. Maybe they'll get curious and check it out. Then hopefully they'll realize what a great compliment Duolingo makes to their classes. I really like Duolingo, and if I had a choice I'd choose to use it alongside with a class. I personally find that classes provide me a good level of motivation that I have a hard time achieving on my own. But just a class alone doesn't provide me the level of instruction I need to make it to a good level. The two together would make a magical combination xD
