Why timer in timed practice doesn't stop when clicked on "Discuss sentence"?

I have translated a sentence and it was marked wrong. I wanted to check the comments to clear things up a bit, but my clock ran down and I couldn't finish the practice. What is the motive behind this? Shouldn't we be encouraged to clear things up if we see we don't understand something?

I understand that timed practice is all about being fast enough, but since I have already answered the question - there seems to be no reason to continue the clock if I seek for some quick explanation in the comments.

EDIT: Thank you everyone! The review button and searching the forum are cool and I'm perfectly happy with that!

You are misunderstanding the purpose of timed practice. Timed practice is to get you used to thinking on your feet and responding quickly, so that you can better listen to radio broadcasts, watch video clips, and participate in live conversations. In a live setting, a person does not have the luxury of saying "Hang on, let me go look at Wordreference.com or pull out my favorite grammar book." You have to just shake it off and forge ahead doing the best you can.

If you want a practice session where you have the freedom to view discussions, ponder things, and report errors, then select the review session that does not have a time limit.

They are two completely different skills, and it looks like you're trying to mix them up.

Here a way to have all your time to ask your questions about as many exercises you want from a time practice:
At the end of your time practice, copy the exact sentence of the exercise(s) you want to access the SD (sentence discussion) then search in the forum of the course this exact --- so within quote (") marks --- SD.

  • If no result: either you mistyped it or there are no SD.
  • If a result: you have now all the time you want to ask your questions.

Duo probably doesn't implement it because, even if not if not used in order to cheat, it'd defeat the purpose of time practice: pushing you to answer "by reflexe". If you make ask questions, make something else in the middle, then it put you out of this "quick, quick, quick!" situation that is intended.

EDITION:
I get rid of the "take a screenshot" part since it's not necessary. Thx Knocksedan for the remark!

People have mentioned this for years. The powers that be in Pittsburgh who run Duolingo don't seem to be interested in adding this feature (or communicating with users generally).

There are ways to tweak the way your browser interacts with the Duolingo website.

In particular there is a script that is supposed to allow you to review the discussions from a lesson after the lesson is complete.

There's also one that will stop the clock in timed practice, but that seems to defeat the purpose, especially if you can review the discussions after the fact anyway.

No need to make screenshots
[from another comment to which I can't answer due to 6child-answer limit]

Thx for the correction! (I imagined this way without doing a time practice, I just forgot the final review that appeared after I stopped going regularly any practice ;))

I updated my comments.

Judging by the code - this script had been working before June 2015, but after duolingo updating it does not able to work. The script uses classes which does not exist now.

That's a shame! Some people obviously put a lot of effort into the wikia site, I thought something as significant as site updates that broke scripts would have triggered updates.
