Using classrooms for competitions
Moderators have noticed a trend lately, people using classrooms for XP competitions.
Duolingo asks users not to exchange email addresses through the website. By posting a link to a classroom on the website, you are exchanging email addresses. For this reason, such posts must be removed. Please do not ask people to join a classroom in order to join a competition.
If you wish to be removed from a classroom you signed up for, you may use this link https://www.duolingo.com/settings/observer
Got it! You can simply follow your teammates and/or contestants and look at the leaderboard to see how your team (or your contestants) are doing :)
It works pretty much the same as Classroom but without sharing personal information.
Oh, sorry!!! Is it ok if I finish this comp that I'm holding right now with the classrooms? It would just be veryyyy complicated if I deleted them in the middle of my comp!
Please close the competition to any new entrants. Good luck with the game! :)
Thanks for jumping up Usagi! This problem was very hard to take care of.
I think he means that people have been having XP competitions lately, and they've been using classrooms to make that possible. So when you have a classrooom, you can see all of the emails, and Usagiboy7 would just like people to stop because of personal information (also known as emails) and Duolingo just asks people not to. At least, I think that's what he means.
Yes, it is because those competitions violate the guidelines' request that people not use Duolingo to exchange email addresses that people need to not do that.
i noticed that a member I was friends with, Kazooka13 something, and their account was gone, I couldn't go on it, it said there was an error. She made a competition with a classroom but they didn't know it was illegal. Did you deactivate it?
That I know of, no one has been deactivated for running a contest. However, if a person changes their username you will get a 404 error message if you try to use their old username to look at their account, unless you have a redirect link. You can look up the redirect link if they've messaged you through activity stream and you have email notifications active.
I went back to the contest under the discussions that I am following and it said that they were deactivated
It is possible that they deactivated themselves. I really don't have a clue what happened with their account though.
