Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

To all the beginners!!

Just wanted to say DONT QUIT!! I started duolingo back in September and it's one of the best things I've ever done, I never ever in a million years thought I could understand french and I can now watch tv shows (with french subtitles) and understand the idea of what's going on!! I can read an article and understand it. This is going to be a life long journey and I will never stop learning, I'm sure I will learn a new word every day but that's the fun of it!! If you think you will never learn, you're wrong!! Just study your lessons every day and I promise it will get easier..and thank goodness for the duolingo forums and the community of people willing to help here!!

Good luck and even if it's one lesson a day..don't quit!!

Thanks again to duolingo!!

Started May 20th 2013, finished the tree the other day after a break. I supplement with a lot of other tools including jumping into 3rd semester college French after only 3 months of Duo study. I hated languages in school, never felt like I had "the aptitude for it", turns out I just needed the attitude for it.

The advice I can give you all it supplement! Although duo is very grammar averse I found the traditional, grammar heavy, course to be a great balance, especially since Duo's coverage of tenses is very poor. Should be taking the final and finishing up with a solid B. Pas mal pour un débutant.

Personally I prefer movies without subtitles if possible, it really helps to challenge the ears to hear the words, even if you don't fully follow the dialog. One of my early favorites was "Kung-fu panda". It's hard, but it's rewarding when each time I rewatch something I can always pick out new things.

30 weeks in and I'm watching French movies like Amelie, Red ( rouge ),Girl on a Bridge ( La Femme sur le point ), and anything else I can get my hands on. I can actually follow most of the basics of the dialog without subtitles, although I still miss bunches as well. Not all movies are great for the beginner, but even just in the background they help to train the ears.

Practice, practice, practice. Watching movies is practice, setting up you ipad/computer/gmail to Français is practice, talking to yourself in French is practice. It's a matter of knowledge and time.

From AJATT "You don't know a language, you live it. You don't learn a language, you get used to it."

I joined Duolingo April 23rd 2013 and I have to tell you joining this site was one of those monumental moments in my life where experiencing/learning something new changes your life forever. I now have a different perspective in life and I would have never thought that perspective would have involved the French language.

I was watching this video about a young polygot and he said that indulging in a new language opens your eyes to all the cultural differences, standards, behaviors, etc. that the outside world doesn't know about and I have to say he was right.

I'm wide awake like Katy Perry and it feels like I'm aliveeeeeeeee =D

Thanks! Je suis noveau, trop! c'est d'accord si je vous ajoute à ma liste sur duolingo?

I am okay at it. I get tongue tied when trying to speak it, my ear isn't too trained, but reading and writing? Thats mah junk. I am really good at that. Maybe I could just be a french mute and write all my french, lol. I see you are at level 11 with a whopping 32 day streak. I am freshman so I don't streak that often . My longest streak was about 7 days. I have been going at it for like 6 months, but I am not that devoted because I see my french teacher almost evertday.

Hi!

You're in about the same spot of your tree as I am in mine, and I don't feel I'm quite at the level you're reporting. I definitely can pick up on a word here or there, but a lot of it is still very difficult. Did you have prior french training or experience?

Just thought I'd give a head's up for others that may not be experiencing the same success - definitely don't give up though! I've gotten as far as I have in only a little over a month, and it's been a fantastic journey.

No I have ZERO prior experience in french!! I remember about 7 months ago I heard s'il vous plaît and was like "what the *bleep" does that mean?!" Hahahah but I feel for 4months I should be a little bit farther than I am now but I'm not getting discouraged, this is they way my brain is leaning and I am happy :)
