If one lives in a former Dutch colony, knowing The language is virtually a necessity. Ja, you can get along w/o it, but you're cut out of too many conversations and basic understandings, not to mention the associated Dutch literature. And then their are the trips back to the mother country, biking through the polders, dunes, and klein dorpjes -- ever so much more fun to speak Dutch the while.
