TG4- Tá ceist agam
What dialect is used in most TG4 shows? I've been watching some shows (with subtitles...sigh) and can't quite pinpoint. Do they speak in one particular dialect, or is it specific to the character?
Go raibh mile maith agat!
It depends. There is usually a mixture. If you have a specific programme in mind, someone may be familiar with it or the actors involved to comment.
Nonetheless, perhaps given the location of TG4's headquarters and the fact that it's the largest dialect, Connaught Irish, especially that of Connemara, predominates.
Go raibh maith agat! Thanks, I was wondering, because sometimes I could understand a few characters, and others I had a harder time understanding. I had figured that there would be different dialects used, with the different actors' backgrounds and such. I doubt that TG4 would require them all to use the same dialect, as this would be like requiring everyone on an american TV show to speak with a New York accent, which would be absurd.
On a seperate note, I've found that watching TG4 has really improved my ear for spoken Irish tremendously, and it's fun to watch as well.
Just to clarify TG4 is a channel not a tv show, you might be talking about Ros na Rún or something?
