Someone Help Me With All The Language Learning Lingo!
I've been on here for a while and I'm still not used to the frequent use of words like: infinitive (can't actually think of any more right at this moment, but there are more :| ).
I'm not talking about words such as: accusative, dative, etc. I mean the ones that aren't covered in lessons. It makes reading comments on questions really difficult. Can someone please help me or direct me to somewhere that would be helpful.
Cheers, Lonely Language Learner ;)
The infinitive is the base form of a verb that isn't conjugated for person or number.
There are a lot of resources for people making constructed languages (like Klingon or Esperanto, for instance) that cover basic linguistic terminology in a pretty casual and low-level way. You could Google something like "conlang infinitive" maybe...
Summer Institute of Linguistics has a pretty good dictionary online for such terms but it can be somewhat technical.
You might find this sticky from the French forums helpful. Just ignore the parts at the beginning that are only for French and scroll down to the glossary. It explains pretty much all the basic grammar lingo (minus accusative and dative) that you'll find in the comments.
