Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

More RPG elements, please... ?

So, what REALLY first attracted me to Duolingo was the idea of leveling up and unlocking more as you gained in experience. When I completed those first few lessons and saw "BYOOOOOM, YOU'VE REACHED LEVEL TWOOOOOOOOaaaaaaahhhh" my only thought was "OMG, this changes everything".

However, I was sad to see that this concept was basically dropped after I made it maybe 1/4 of the way down the tree. I'm still earning XP and I'm still leveling up (albeit verrrry slowwwwly, which is fine), but I've long since unlocked all there is to unlock in the lingot store and I feel like the experience points and lingots just keep rolling in with no real purpose.

What I'd like to see (and I cannot imagine that I'm alone here) is more RPG elements. Maybe a basic character creator as an alternative to the current profile picture we have now, and sweet language-learning based loot with which to deck out said avatars. Like a dope viking sword for finishing the Norwegian tree, complete--of course--with mini Norwegian history lesson.

Or maybe different models of Duo that our avatars can have as pets. (Full disclosure, I got so happy when I was able to unlock the tracksuit for Duo. He rocks it to this day.)

The list goes on.

Stats: Who wouldn't love to see their INTELLIGENCE stat increase on the site (in game, as it were) as they flex their brain muscles IRL?

[edit, 11:55am, Jan. 20] OOOh. Or ENDURANCE. The higher your streak, the more endurance you gain. Or maybe a high endurance stat reduces the drop-off rate of your streak if you miss a day.

Achievements:

IE

Complete 10, 20, 30 (50??? 100?????) lessons in a day. Complete a language tree (though, arguably, the Duo statue we get for that is pretty darn neat-o). Translate 100, 250, 500, 1000 sentences. REACH MAX LEVEL Equip your avatar w/ all level 25 gear (WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS???)

My final thought is this: the carrot on the stick incentive is very strong. Get people invested in the site as a game and there's no end to the amount of language-learning that will take place.

What do you guys think? Do you have any awesome ideas?

BRB, off to grind some more XP.

Well one idea that circulated some time ago was to introduce achievements. I would still support that idea, especially since they should be quite easy to implement and almost unlimited in terms of versatility.

Hello! I agree, I think they are great ideas.

I'd love it if the lingot store had more than the 3 usual bonus skills that we can already get. I love unlocking new lessons and learning new words, but with the tree all in golden... I don't really feel as excited to pratice my lessons as I used to feel when I used to get new vocabulary. I've done the reverse tree and I also use immersion but I wish there was a way to get more skills. Nonetheless I feel really thankful to be able to take these courses as they are.

Also, this a crazy idea, so it's probably not going to happen but it'd be nice if there were videos (whether subtitled or not) on immersion, for instance, that we could translate / subtitle or maybe just subtitled videos to watch, let's say that maybe the avatars and sentences that are already used in lessons could be part of the dialogues... so we'd understand better the contextual aspects of what we learn. I mean we can always dream, can't we? I'd gladly help if it was necessary to make this a reality.

Hope this post gets more attention so more people share their own opinion.

I would love this. The sole reason I have stayed so long with duolingo is the fact I can level up and gain XP for a language and at the same time learn new languages in a fun way. These ideas that you have are perfect. we could buy different outfits for our characters using lingots and maybe introduce an online battling system where you can compete with other players and the quickest and most acurate player wins. And also like memorise we could have different titles like beginner, expert etc on our profiles

Yes to PvP and titles! Language-related titles would be amazing. Level 2 Spanish awards "El Estudiante" and level 25 awards "El Maestro" or something similar.

Yes it would be perfect :) would really motivate us to level up. and maybe as we level up we can unlock things from the lingot store. Like imagine a certain skill can only be unlocked and bought if they are level 12. It works for call of duty and that is what makes that game so addictive although it is not as beneficial as duolingo imo

This is a good idea for a route that Duolingo could consider! Designing characters and letting the sentences you translate and write revolve around those characters, e.g., my hair is... I ate... I'm going, and finally ending conversations selecting the correct choice!

Yeah, maybe even something like 'Kindness' can be implemented when your character would end a statement asking 'and you/yourself?'

Of course this would require a major development process depending on what features would be added... Still all for it, not a bad idea at all! Imagine if you could then use a microphone to construct your own sentences O.O"

We just need to be careful that people are still motivated more by the joy of understanding something you didn't understand before, than by getting the next item in the store. And also, let's not encourage anything that will cause a flood of people misusing Immersion. Otherwise, I tentatively endorse this concept. I love the idea of continued checkpoints. It would be great if we could level up to level 30.
