If this is what pnehls is talking about, _I'm all for it._

The streak is not a goal by itself, it is just a means of motivation. Take a rest if you need it and start gaining a new streak after it, that's all. After all, in school you start a new term after holidays: new tasks, new marks, new assignments and new tests.

For me, personally, streak freeze is a cheat. Streak is the number of days you've been studying without breaks. Using a streak freeze is like saying "I've been studying for X days without breaks, but actually I made a break with the freeze". Sounds crazy %) Either you study every day or you don't, anything else is just deceiving yourself and others... Just an opinion, though.

I agree with you. Also, luckily, lingots are not so important here on Duolingo, and I hope they never will.

i think he is referring to streak holidays, as in if you do nothing on christmas, it doesn't end your streak, or maybe not

Why not just buy a streak freeze?

You can only buy a one day streak freeze at a time so if you are away somewhere without access to the internet you lose your streak. There are still places on the planet where internet access is limited.

I was responding specifically to the comment, "if you do nothing on christmas..." Christmas is only one day and a streak freeze would serve that purpose.

That being said, I agree there needs to be an option for a longer streak freeze (see my comment here http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1096250 ), but I don't think it should be automatically given to everybody. The streak represents your regular practice of the language, and if you want to take a longer break I think you need to have earned it through practice, as demonstrated by having lingots available to spend.

It would be nice to have a short period of rest, but it could pose a problem for some who would forget words over the holidays...perhaps Duolingo could give everybody a free "streak freeze" as a gift? Who knows!

In case one happens to be somewhere without internet access. I wouldn’t miss a day of Duo practice if I had a choice, but for some people they may be in a situatuon where they have to miss a day. :)
