Encouragement for the Welsh for English Speakers Course Creators

I read your most recent update, and I must say that while the tutors' response to the presentation of the course was underwhelming, those of us who have wanted to learn Welsh for years are OVERWHELMINGLY excited about the course and your hard work!

I have wanted to learn Welsh since I was 18. I remember buying a few programs that taught it to one extent or another, but found them frustrating and inadequate. Duolingo has been an amazing program for me and language learning, so I'm thrilled with the possibility that I can FINALLY use an interface and method to learn Welsh which has been extremely effective for my learning style.

I just want to tell you all that many of us are soooo excited about the opportunity you are giving us. Thank you so much for your dedication to the dissemination of the Welsh language!!!!! :)

This is the update being referred to:

Apologies to anyone worried about the lack of an update last week.

I'd made a presentation about the course to a large group of fellow Welsh for adults tutors, for whom the course is explicity designed, and the response was underwhelming to say the least. This was a very depressing experience.

Sometimes we forget how far in advance we are of the general population.

Anyway the good news is that we seem to have removed a couple of bugs in the course and we're now doing last minute stuff to get it in a reasonable state for release sometime in the middle of next week.

Cerddwn ymlaen!!

I completely agree with the encouragement! I'm not looking to learn Welsh myself but I value it a lot and I think it would be great if more people spoke some of the Celtic languages.

I am also very excited. I've been trying to learn Welsh on and off for the past 2 decades. Whilst my understanding of Welsh is reasonable my ability to construct sentences is currently very basic. Looking back through my Twitter account it seems that I first tweeted about hoping for a Welsh Duolingo course in September 2014! I've been hugely impressed by the speed with which the team have written the course.

A friend of my Mum's, who lives in England, has grandchildren who are learning Welsh at school in Wales. He is very eager to start the Duolingo course and learn how to talk to his grandchildren in Welsh.

I agree completely. This course has taken shape quickly, but I have a good feeling that it is going to be well put together based on the updates I have read.

Agreed. I've wanted to learn Welsh since I was 18. I will definitely be in on this Welsh course.

For anyone wanting an early start, the popular UK quiz show "Pointless" lately asked a panel of 100 online quizzers the following 5 Welsh words:

Araf

Bore da

Nadolig Llawen

Cymru

Croeso

Encouragingly, even the least-known phrase scored 23.

well I was going to say I only recognise 2 - Cymru <-- trying to spell that while pronouncing it is VERY confusing XD and Croeso. But then I realised Nadolig is similar to Nollaig so I'm going with merry christmas. :3 No idea what the other 2 are. I'll google them in a sec.

I did go to uni in wales as an EU student, but most of my welsh is the places I went to/lived at from recognising them at train stations! (Similar to Ireland, they said and showed it in Welsh and English)

Encouragement seconded! Or, um... sixthed? at this point. Duo has been overall wonderfully addictive and helpful for slacker autodidact would-be polyglots, so... eager to turn it to the first language I ever tried to teach myself (and gave up) (and tried again) (repeatedly, for the last two decades). Don't let the skeptics get you down. ^__^==b

Well, encouragement definitely offered! I want to and am going to learn Welsh, and I'd like it to be Duolingo that gets me started. All power to you.
