When I do the practices, I feel like I get a lot more practice at speaking words, matching, and typing English translations, than I do at typing out words in Russian (either listening to them and typing them out, or typing Russian translations of English words or phrases).

Is there any way I can get more of this sort of practice? It feels like I'm wasting time and getting bored repeating the earlier exercises but then I get overwhelmed when I have to type because my typing (especially my spelling) isn't up to the level of my comprehension.

I'd love to be able to request or tell Duo to give me more of this sort of practice, or even choose to JUST do this practice. But in the absence of this feature, I think it would be useful to like, shift the burden of practice a bit to give more typing exercises.

Disable the microphone in the settings area and have a look whether the speaking exercices are replaced by writing ones.

I had this problem before the microphone exercises were introduced. However...I actually like the microphone exercises, what I wish I could disable were the translate to English exercises because those are the easy/boring ones...speaking is a bit harder and writing is hardest.

I wish Duo would like, adapt and give me more writing exercises...I get those wrong over and over again and often it just pushes me through the practice lesson by giving me more of the types of exercise I'm better at.

You might like to bring up a word document page on your computer and type in the English phrases as you come across them. Then print that out and use it to then type out the translations on a separate page. That gives you practice at typing and also translation. Then when you feel like it do the pages of translations from Russian to English and English to Russian. That way you give yourself plenty of practice without burdening the duolingo system. :)

This is actually a really good idea, I can keep a document open in another window and just switch between them to get extra typing practice as I'm doing the exercises.
