Yay, Welsh!

...five minutes later...

Phew, quite a steep start. I wish the literal meaning of each word was explained. I'm rather bad at memorising whole phrases without understanding what the words mean by themselves. Well, I guess things should become clearer a few lessons down the tree.

There were quite a few instances that didn't tell the meaning of the individual words, but just of two or three words together. Things like "I am", and even with the dictionary hints I couldn't tell which of the words meant "I" and which meant "am".

Of course, Welsh only just entered Beta, so probably the hints will still improve, but at the moment you need external resources if you don't want to wait until more examples that use the same words clarify the meaning.

It can sometimes be a mistake, when starting a language, to focus too much on the meaning of each individual word. The Welsh course is using certain standard phrases in the first few skills repeatedly (e.g. I want, you want) and while obviously the formulations break down into individual words, just recognising the whole phrase's meaning is probably enough at the start.

It's probably a matter of your personal learning style. I'm one of those who you can drive crazy by not telling them how the phrase actually works, in terms of both vocabulary and grammar. That can be different for you, without anything being wrong with any of us.

I have to disagree, learning the individual words aids my retention and understanding so much. It's really a learner-specific issue. Luckily it's not been too much of an issue so far - experience with other Celtic languages plus some use of google has helped me stay on top of which word is which, and what the construction of a given welsh sentence is actually like. Whilst learning whole phrases is probably enough for you and those with learning styles like yours, there are those of us whose styles benefit from a more analytical approach.

I just went to the Add a new course page and you cannot add the course yet, although the Incubator says it is in Beta.

Yes! I just started with it. Fun times. Nice to see both Irish and Welsh here, really gives people options if they want to get into Celtic languages.

Released into beta after only 110 days!

This is the second fastest course created for English speakers in the Incubator after Danish (82 days).

I've asked Duo to notify me when it becomes available. I'm assuming, since they haven't notified me yet, that they'll tell me when it actually shows up on the course page, right?

Maybe, maybe not. I know some people have mentioned being notified before, but despite having tried to use the notification feature since it became available, I've never once been notified of a newly available course.

I asked to be notified for the Russian cours, and I got a mail a couple of weeks after it was released. I expect they want to prevent a run on the servers that way.

As others have said, they send the notification only a few days or weeks after it’s out (in order to have time to check that there is no obvious malfunction in the course). Note also that you won’t be notified at all if you start the course in the mean time (because they assume that if you started the course, you already know that it is available so you don’t need to be notified). This is probably why idshanks hasn’t been notified of the availability of some courses.
