When to use esso/essa/egli ?

Hello, I have sometimes encountered esso/essa/egli or its plural forms in Italian books. Are these subject pronouns used much in Italian? If so, when do we use them and what do they indicate? For example, when using direct object pronouns lui/lei they seem to only refer to people, so do esso/essa refer to things?

Thanks!

You are right: lui/lei refer to people. esso and essa refer to things.
