How to watch Welsh television
I posted the following on the English discussion board a couple of months ago, I think it is worth repeating now we have a Welsh discussion board:
Watching Welsh television with English subtitles has really helped me to increase my understanding of the language. The Welsh broadcaster, S4C, has recently started to make some of their programmes available to watch internationally online. The full list of programmes is available here http://www.s4c.cymru/en/international/
All the programmes should have English subtitles, although I find that the subtitles are not always particularly good on programmes which are broadcast live, like Prynhawn Da and Heno. Unfortunately subtitles don't work on some mobile devices.
If you live in the UK (or know how to make your computer pretend that it's in the UK) there is an even greater choice of programmes to watch here http://www.s4c.cymru/clic/e_index.shtml or you can watch S4C using the BBCiPlayer app (I find that the picture quality is much better on my phone if I use the BBC app). Details of how to watch S4C on television in the UK can be found here http://www.s4c.cymru/e_how_digital.shtml
In my opinion one of the best programmes for beginners to watch is Dwylo'r Enfys. (Sadly this isn't available internationally) It is aimed at children who are learning Makaton (simple sign language) but the presenters talk as well as signing. They tend to use simple language and frequently repeat words and phrases.
When I'm flicking through the channels, I sometimes end up stuck on S4C and being entranced by the language even though, at the moment, I can't understand much of it. Now the Welsh course is here, it won't be long before I can watch programs on there and understand them, completely :D
When you said in the UK, do you mean the whole of the UK? I swear I remember a programme that I couldn't watch because I was in England and Wales is one of the 5 or so countries that hola doesn't support specifically
the whole of the UK can watch S4C on satellite television, and s4c.cymru and BBC iPlayer let you watch almost all of the programmes across the U.K. too.
You should be able to watch S4C online from anywhere in the UK without using a VPN such as Hola. (I'm in England and it's never been a problem for me)
The only exception might be some live sports programmes where they only have the licence to broadcast in Wales.
