Duolingo Basque: Introduction, FAQ, Table Of Contents
Starting Wednesday the 3rd of February I will be making Basque lessons here on Duolingo. There will be a new lesson each Wednesday. I may decide to increase the amount of lessons per week if I see that there is a lot of support.
This post contains and introduction and it will also serve as a directory to all the lessons. Don't worry if you miss anything! I will link this post with every new lesson I make.
If you are waiting for a Basque course to launch on Duolingo, then this would be a great place to start! My course will assume that you have no knowledge of Basque prior to starting this.
I am going to structure each lesson like and actual Duolingo one, as best as I can. There will be a vocabulary section, a tips and notes section and then some exercises to test your knowledge. Every once in a while, I will post some extra tips, revision, tests or resources.
The course will be for English speakers, but I will also include Spanish and French translations to the vocabulary too if there is a demand or need.
I hope you will enjoy learning Basque!
Please don't post your question here! Please post it on my stream! If the question is recurring or of significance, I will include it here.
I am wondering what will the course format be ? And if you have time, would you able to upload the word list on memrise too?
I'm going to structure it like a regular Duolingo skill/lesson. First there will be a vocabulary section for new words, then a sentences section so you can see how to use these new words, then the Tips and Notes section and then finally a section to test what you have learned. When I am preparing the lessons, I type them on Microsoft Word and then transfer them. I am thinking of making a PDF so people that can print the lessons. I also love the idea of a Memrise course for this! I will definitely do that!
Table Of Contents
Here I will post a link to all the lessons. I will also give a schedule of lessons ahead. Follow the discussion so you can check if there is a new lesson. I will still post a link to this post on every lesson anyway.
Due to the recent Immersion for all languages hack, I have created this post, for a Basque Immersion hub. Use this to help improve your vocabulary and overall knowledge of Basque.
I am working on the first skill already. I promise to make them consistent!
Gero arte! See you later!
Yeah! BASQUE! I am so excited about this!
Thanks! The support I have received so far is amazing:) I'm thinking of doing two lessons a week now, but maybe I'll just do one for a small bit and see how things go.
I will be grateful for anything.
One day hopefully, we'll see an official Duolingo course on Basque. Until then, holding off that vacation plan to Bilbao.
I went there, you must go! Most people actually speak Spanish in Bilbao, so you would get around fine. It's best to know Basque/Spanish/French if you are going all around the Basque country.
Sure! I don't mind:) I might do an updated version of my old series with more lessons too.
Ez horregatik! I'm guessing you know what that means because the Basque flag is your profile pic:)
Oh yeah! That is one of my ancesters' language! How did you learn Basque?
Through online resources for English speakers. I'm not fully fluent yet, but nearly:)
Hey I can translate it into Spanish! I could make a post of it(In Spanish) and give you credit!
wow , you're truly a nice guy! thanks for this! and how do you say devil in basque?
Thanks! Devil is deabru. If you wanted to say 'the devil' it would be 'deabrua'. Basically, you add an 'a' to the end of a noun if you want to make it definite. I will explain this in the first skill next Wednesday.
How exciting! All I know about Basque (which I learned in Spanish class) is that it's very different to all the languages around it, looking forward to learning more! Thanks for putting this together, as well.
I heartily approve of this. Basque is one of the languages I want on Duolingo the most.
Great job! I'm sure you will get the course in the future and meanwhile this is the best option to promote the Basque here in Duolingo.
I only see one problem, the visibility of this post is limited. I just discovered it after 1 month. Let's think about posible solutions!
Eskerrik asko:) I will put a link on my stream to promote it. Thanks for your advice!
Thank you so much! I am wondering what will the course format be ? And if you have time, would you able to upload the word list on memrise too (like the duolingo Russian and duolingo welsh class on memrise). Either way, I am really really grateful that you take the time to do this!
Thanks:) I'm going to structure it like a regular Duolingo skill/lesson. A downloadable PDF is a great idea! Also I think excel might work better than words when you put up a word list , because of its table structure and easier batch upload to flash card softwares in the future. Anyway, thanks again !!!
Flashcards are another good idea! I used to make them in powerpoint in such a way that when it prints it turns into a flashcard.
Ya by flash cards I mean memrise, anki or other stuff like that. And I believe if you put your words in excel (like words in one column and translations in another) you would be able to easily convert the file to a format that can be used for batch upload.
What I will do is a PDF, a Memrise course and a printable flashcard set for users who don't have a Memrise account. I just created a Memrise account so I'll need to learn how it works first. It's pretty straight forward anyway.
Hello. This is a terrific idea and i will be quite busy on those day on Duolingo I guess : P Just as a question, is there anyway to apply?
YES, because of my tech issues, I must post here but I will ust add to my comment each time. I upvoted it and gave you 5 lingots.
Hi! I am considering inviting two people to translate the vocabulary into French and Spanish, but I'll see how the first one goes to see if that's necessary.
This is really cool! My dad's family speaks Basque so I'm suuuuper excited for this! Thank you for everything
Aizu! Ni ere euskarako ikastaroan parte hartu nahi dut! Bada ordua euskara duolingon egoteko. Zer egin behar dut ikastaroan parte hartzeko?
Kaixuo Unaikk! Eskaera bat bidali al diozu inkubagailuari? Orain badaude gutxienez zortzi eskaera bidali duen pertsona :)
