It's the second most common language in the world. And it is only beat by Mandarin.

Yeah that's been brought up a lot. It will likely be a few years before they get there.

That's true for Spanish as a first language. But if you combine first and second languages, English comes in second to Mandarin.

It depends on where you are. There are towns near where I leave where it's almost as common to hear Spanish on the street as English.

Quite definitely, but you should not just look at how common a language is when you are determining which one you are learning next. I always think about how spread out they are in the world. Chinese is the most commonly spoken, but good luck trying to use it to get around any whole country but China. Spanish is good for Spain, South America, the Philippines, and Central America. French, my obvious favorite, is used in Canada, a bit of the US, much of Europe, and a good deal of Northern Africa. The most widespread by far is English, so you are already in a good position!

I would say that Spanish is a very commonly used language! According to Google, there are 400 million Spanish speakers in the world.

Yep, pretty common in a lot of places. I've had conversations in Spanish in the following countries: the US, Mexico, Jamaica, Spain, and India. So it can turn up a fair amount even in places you don't expect!

I live in Southern California and I can't go a day without hearing Spanish to a significant degree just walking around in my city. It's significant enough in the U.S. as a whole that sites like Yahoo are beginning to have their U.S. news also in Spanish.

That aside, there are quite a few Spanish speaking countries that are prominent on the world stage.

So yeah, Spanish is pretty common.
