Hello! Without going into the historical accuracy of the sentence, I was wondering which of these is a more appropriate translation for the above sentence."

b) Finland koloniserades av Sverige och Ryssland.

Both are equivalent in their core meaning. Which one is appropriate depends on what you want to emphasise - a) emphasises the agents (Russia and Sweden) and their action, while b) is more neutral, perhaps emphasising the patient (Finland) more.

Maybe a better way to phrase is that a) emphasiess the fact that there are agents doing something to the patient, while b) leaves it more vague.

Båda är rätt men "koloniserat" stavas med ett t.

(Btw, Finland was an integral part of Sweden and never a "colony" like for example Swedish Estonia).
