A language revelation
I know many of you find it scary to talk to people in a foreign language, so I thought I would share an experience with you. Last week I was at a party. After a few drinks I met a girl who had lived in Italy. I told her I was learning Italian on Duolingo and soon we started talking Italian with each other. A while later I met another person who was from Spain. I took Spanish in highschool so I thought, why not, and we started conversing in Spanish. Later on I met another person who turned out to be from France. French was the first language I started with on Duo (only got halfway) and is probably the most basic language I know out of the three. Nevertheless, through my understanding of Italian and Spanish, I could understand most of his French.
For me, this was a complete revelation! Yes, the alcohol helped and yes, I made many many mistakes. But most importantly, every person that I spoke with understood me! I remember thinking when I was younger "holy cow, learning a language must be so hard". But think about it, we have a tool at our disposal which perhaps is not perfect in letting us reach fluency, but at least it gives us the opportunity to understand others and be understood.
If I can give you any advice it is MAKE MISTAKES and make many! Trust me, even when people have laughed at them, I have laughed with them.
Haha! No worries, I do not drink that often and I am usually just as brave. I think it was partially due to the party that I was able to meet so many people from different nationalities.
