I've noticed that in the Esperanto course, no matter how much you refresh your skills, they always weaken too quickly, leaving no chance for me to complete my tree without having to strengthen previous lessons, even if I already know the vocabulary, the grammar and just have finished said set of words.

By the way: I have OCD. Seeing an uncompleted tree just make me want to... ...argh! XD

I'm about halfway through the tree without any skill losing gold yet. I typically do one new lesson a day and always do two general strengthening exercises for every new lesson. I'm also re-gilding my Spanish tree. Three skill-specific strengthening exercises a day seems enough to eventually do it. However, I'm a bit impatient, so I do at least four. This article is pretty good for your question.

I know, sometimes it's frustrating. But not just in the Esperanto course, it is a problem in general. There maybe should be an option to choose the speed of repetition individually.

Have you tried tricking yourself? Well not really yourself, rather the system. Sometimes you only need to do a short timed practice to regolden a skill. It won't stay gold for long, but if you need to gold in order to continue your tree it might help you advance. Of course doing a normal practice will make the skills stay golden longer.
It just took me 190 days to slowly regilden my french tree. Now it is all golden again and when I have the time I do normal strengthening exercises. But sometimes I just do a quick timed practice to keep it golden. Finally I have reached the point where I can focus on the thing I really still don't know. But it was very slow.
Look at the bright side. As you need to keep everything golden it will stay golden in your head as well. I was wondering how dumb Duo must think I am being prompted "The girl" over and over again. But eventually it stopped and I advanced in my tree.
Be patient, the day will come when you have everything golden.

My Dutch tree has all decayed at once, it is very off-putting.

I have the same problem. Eventually, I got so tired of restrengthening the same skills that I already know how to use over and over that I just ignore it now. Whenever I try to restrengthen the whole tree, it ungilds itself within only a day or two.

This has come up a few times before. Last time, I was suffering from the same issue as you. My tree was complete, but not gold, and I was barely keeping up. I was given this advice: don't practice skills that are falling behind, re-do them. It's more work, but it's not on a timer, so it can be easier. I tried that and now my entire tree is gold.

I've also noticed this being more of a problem with Esperanto than other languages. And, like you, I don't feel like moving on to the next skill until I've re-gilded the lessons that have weakened. Long story short, I'm pretending like Esperanto no longer exists and starting into Welsh (which doesn't seem to have the same problem).

I've read that Duolingo notices when you use the 'hover' help for words. So if you're using that, it would make the skill weaken faster.

I also have noticed that if I go back through and actually redo the lessons, those items almost never need strengthened. Which may or may not be a good thing. But, I like to redo the actual lessons as it gives me a sense of where I stand...
