shouldn't 'mujer' be mother as well as woman?

No. "Mother" is "Madre".

Could it mean "wife" in this context however?

It would be a bit weird.

Within context "wife" easily fits in here.

Typically, in Spanish "mujer" means wife when there is a possessive modifying it. For example, "Mi mujer es bonita" is "My wife is pretty", but "La mujer es bonita" means "The woman is pretty" (and not really "the wife is pretty").

Can "Sola"(Fem) mean single also ??

If you mean "single" as in "has no boyfriend", then no.
