Why is a "la" before "vio" not necessary?

asserted and affirmed are the same thing ... not sure why i got both options and had to guess if it's both or just affirmed. it's a distinction without a difference that cost me a heart ... and you know how much i hate losing hearts!

Why cant another translation be "He affirmed that she/you saw your mother?" Without further context we dont know if its HER(the subject) who saw "your mother." Am i wrong or is Duolingo wrong for marking me incorrect
