From my own experience, I would say that Catalan consists of:

60 % Spanish

30 % French (phonetically, the orthography is very different to French)

7 % Original content (aka to origin is unknown to me)

3 % Germanic Influences

Of course this is completely unscientific. Because of the strong resemblance to the linguistics neighbours it is not hard to read Catalan texts, but you need to remember all the little differences to Spanish if you want to speak or write it yourself. The pronunciation is different to Spanish, and the Grammar has a few complications which are unknown to Spanish.

I'd say it's more similar to French than either Spanish or Portuguese. Not as much Germanic influence as French, but way more than Spanish has. Little to no direct Arabic influence, which both Spanish and Portuguese have. Lot's of borrowing from Spanish - which is probably to be expected.

Interesting, so it's kind of a proto-Iberian language, or a pre-French/Spanish-divergence romance branch

Well, most specifically it should be called an Occitano-Romance language. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitano-Romance_languages

Portuguese is much closer to Spanish. Still, nobody questions wether it's a separate language. I think this is because people tend to think "one country - one language".

They're different languages which share some words. Other words are completely different. For example: Yo hablo con mis propios primos. Jo parlo amb els meus propis cosins. Je parle avec mes propres cousins. In this sentence Catalan has more in common with French than it does with Spanish.

Catalan is as different from Spanish as French is, when we talk about the origin of the languages: Catalan is in the Gallo-Romance branch of the Romance languages family, while Spanish is in the Ibero-Romance branch, along with Portuguese (so Portuguese is closer to Spanish than Catalan).

However, with the strong castilian influence in the catalanophone territories, Modern Catalan ends up with many similarities shared with Spanish, such as vocabulary (like "hola") and pronounce (in Catalonia, "V" sounds like the Spanish "V").

I haven't got far in Catalan yet, but it feels like it's half Spanish and half French to me, although parts of the pronunciation sound like neither.

There are indeed similarities as well as differences between the languages. This is to be expected with similar languages. Catalan is very similar to Occitan as well. While you can show me similarities I can show you differences...
