Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

How advanced?

I started using duolingo today and must say - wow! Thank you for all the hard working people working on this application and a job well done.

I am currently studying Spanish on duolingo and am wondering, does all the modules equal to one semester of Spanish in college? Can I continue to the next level of Spanish on duolingo or does the language end there?

I had taken four semesters of French and Duolingo has taught me stuff I didn't learn there. I hope this sheds some light there.

Here is a link that talks about the number of hours spent actually doing lessons on duolingo as compared with 1 semester of a university language course. (In the US at least, 1 university course is equivalent to 1 year in high school) :) http://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/16rvgs/a_study_comparing_the_effectiveness_of_duolingo/

Thanks for the replies - I do know about the study however am wondering how advanced can one get with the program --- is finishing the course equal to a Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced level of Spanish?

It depends on the person, honestly. Some users are at the point of being a 3rd/4th year university course student (Advanced Intermediate) with how far they have progressed by only using duolingo, while others are at a 2nd semester (Advanced Beginner) with only using duolingo (finish the tree for both). I can suggest using the search function on the side of the discussion section on duolingo and searching WebCAPE / WebCAPE results. :)
