I used to keep my tree (both trees, actually - Eng to Spa and Spa to Eng) fully golden for the longest time. After taking some time off from Duolingo, however, my trees had deteriorated into a mess! Almost every single skill needed to be regilded.

It's been tougher than I thought, but they are finally all gold again! Woohoo!!!

Awesome! :)

Have you paused your Spanish learning completely when you took time off from Duolingo, or have you done other activities in Spanish such as other courses, reading books, writing things, conversation and so forth. If so, what have you done and how has it helped you? If not do you plan to do that?

Thank you for asking, Jasper! I put my Spanish completely on hold during my absence. I had other things I had to attend to, and I was working on improving myself in other ways. Duolingo had become more of a distraction than anything, but I really just had to work on managing my time better.

When I came back to Duolingo I came back to Spanish, and while the first couple weeks back into it were difficult (wondering what do I still remember, if anything?) it did not take long to get back to where I had left off previously in my studies.

Now I am spending more time with other resources, building my vocabulary and working on my listening and speaking skills. But Duolingo is very dear to me, and I still spend time on here every day as much as I can with my schedule. I also use Anki decks, Memrise, youtube, etc. and have started some language exchange programs as well. One resource I plan on re-listening to this week is the Spanish Language Transfer series. That audio book was a ton of help back when I first listened to it, and now I bet I will be able to glean even more information from it, especially in the more complex latter parts.

Great to read what you're doing. I recognize a lot of what you're saying. I also had some months of absence and I also had to learn to manage my time better. However, the last 1.5 month have been great. I have chosen my main goal (learning Spanish) and much more serious about achieving it.

Nice to read the other activities that you are doing. I actually do or plan to do almost all activities that you mention! Tomorrow I will finish my Spanish tree so I will choose my other goals! One of the first things is to make everything golden, like you did.

I have not heard about the Spanish Language Transfer series, will check it out! Good luck and I am interested in following your further progress! By the way I have checked your profile and I see that you set weekly goals. I like that idea, I might borrow that from you! ;)

Awesome! ¡Es bueno! Keeping everything gold is such a pain, especially when you're busy like I've been. I'm trying to get 15+ (Spanish) skills back to golden before I move on to finish my tree and it's not been easy....

Congrats, Ryan! My Spanish tree... well, most of it is at one bar!

Good for you! I don't know how you did that. I took a long break from my finished Spanish tree, (not meaning I took a break from studying Spanish) came back and just about every skill was decayed. I decided it was too much work to strengthen and re-started my tree. But really, that's great! :)

Nice work. I'm impressed with you folks that can continuously go back and keep completed trees gold. I lost pretty much all motivation to work on my Spanish tree immediately after I finished the last lesson, but stuck with it (kinda) until I hit level 25. I'm sure the poor thing is in dire straits now, but I refuse to look at it. I don't like it having non-gold leaves, but it won't really do me any good to continue going over material I already know well. At least for me, it's best just to let it go.

Honestly Wade, I think I'm in the same category as you there. The appeal of maintaining golden trees has lost its luster over time. However, as it had been more than a year since I brushed up on any of my skills, I thought I'd give it a go for old times' sake. Now I can watch my beautiful tree slowly decay all over again! :D

Congratulations. There is too much that I would have to leave undone if I tried to keep my tree golden. I just make sure I practice every day and listen to Spanish on the radio.
