Mae doesn't meant "A". Welsh have no indefinite article (a/an) and therefore Athro/Athrawes means both "a teacher" and "teacher". "Mae" is used with hi/e/o and either "'n" for the present tense (I am) or "wedi" to form the past tense (I was).
