Looking for ALL who would like to see a Scottish Gaelic course on Duolingo

I would really like to see Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo. I read an article by someone else asking about a Scottish Gaelic course, and I was inspired by the first comment. Here is a link to the discussion...

Any news about a (Scottish) Gaelic course?

So, if you would like to see a Scottish Gaelic course, comment below, upvote the discussion, and maybe we will get the attention of the administrators and moderators.

Also, if you have seen anybody else that is interested in a Scottish Gaelic course, encourage them to upvote this discussion and comment here.

Does anybody know the language, or know somebody who does? If so, mention it in the comments below. To make a Scottish Gaelic course, we need people who know the language, of course!

Here are some more links to other discussions that are either about Scottish Gaelic, or in which Scottish Gaelic is mentioned:

Alright, there are now 132 upvotes on this discussion. Thanks for the support, everyone! We now have at least one person who knows the language and is willing to work on the course. AdhamhOBroin has even applied to work on it. Thank you, AdhamhOBroin!

I was thinking that if we get to 300 upvotes, I would start talking to some of the administrators and moderators to see if we could get it going. Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

Scotland forever!

P.S. Tell everyone you know who might be interested in seeing this course on Duolingo to visit this page!

I just want to say that while we want to get the attention of the administrators and moderators, let us not be a nuisance to them and earn a bad name for those who want to see a Scottish Gaelic course on Duolingo.

Thanks again!

Seo a-nis, a chàirdean!

Some of you may be familiar with my work on Sony Pictures' "Outlander". I'm the Scottish Gaelic Consultant for the show and have years of experience teaching, translating, working on dying dialects, inventing orthography, you name it.

I have already offered my services to Duolingo for the sake of creating a Scottish Gaelic course, but unfortunately never even received a reply to my email. I'm sure they were and still are very busy! :)

However, I would like to think we could continue on the discussion on this topic and have an ear from Duolingo.

Perhaps we could make a bit of a racket and see what happens?

Let me know if you would like me to campaign a bit to be allowed to design a course sometime.

Slàn leibh air an àm!

I think on some level, not getting an answer is not a no - if they'd definitely decided against it, they would've let you know, or at least that's my understanding!

It's really good to know someone with skillzzzzz has applied :D

Why don't you take a look at the German, Welsh and Irish for English speakers courses, and then make a Scottish Gaelic version with similar topics, adding in whatever you need to address specifics in Scottish Gaelic grammar. I'd also find someone who did help incubate a course on Duolingo and ask them what format everything needs to be in. And then, work on the Scottish Gaelic course. When you are done, submit it. They'll be shocked! With all that work done, they might actually be more willing to get it incubated for real. Also, you might have to find a team to help you, as I know they prefer more hands with everyone assigned a section to do.

I think that their busyness is probably due to a high abundance of tickets from all the courses they did get up, on top of getting TinyCards and a phone app going with clubs.

I won't be ready for the course for another 4 years at least if I were to be honest, but I would love to learn it sometime! Best Wishes!

I just want to mention this again (it is very important if we want to get Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo). If you know Scottish Gaelic, and you are willing to work on Scottish Gaelic course, or you know someone who knows it and might be willing to contribute to a Scottish Gaelic course, mention it in the comments.

Also, if you know it and you would like to, apply to get it started or ask the person you know if they would be willing work on it.

Friends of mine insist that it (or rather, a Scottish dialect, they don't know which one since they don't speak the language) sounds similar to a regional Dutch dialect, so I'd be interested in trying it out, certainly.

Llatha math. There's the mango language website that has a good Scottish Gaelic course to go through. It focuses more on learn and repeat, but since its an endangered language its free to use (German, Korean, french, etc. you have to pay for). The course focuses more on conversational speaking, so grammar comes slower than it does here on Duo.

Is there a non gaelic Scottish language? What does Gaelic mean?

    February 20, 2016

    https://www.duolingo.com/LeviMatthew

There is a language called "Scots" that is somewhat similar to English, but an English speaking person wouldn't understand everything that a Scots speaking person says. That language is not Gaelic, it is a Germanic language I think (meaning of the Germanic family of languages). I think Gaelic is a separate family, or in a separate family of languages.

The last link on my original post goes to another discussion that I posted, and there is a Wikipedia link there that is about Scottish Gaelic. Or you could just go to Wikipedia and search "Scottish Gaelic" or "Gaelic".

Hope that wasn't too confusing. If it was, I think I have an ongoing problem of being too confusing. :)

P.S. If your username is "HalbDeutschMann", maybe mine should be "HalbHalbDeutschMann"! I am 1/4 German. Or how do you say "one quarter" in German?

    February 20, 2016

    https://www.duolingo.com/Linaria1

Celtic is a separate family, and you have Goidelic languages (Irish, Gaelic and Manx) and Brittonic langauges (Welsh, Breton and Cornish).

Hi a chàirdean. Duolingo have been in discussions with MG Alba / Learn Gaelic (Gaelic Media Company) and will be co-operating with them on a project. While they are say they are not currently able to offer a full course they are hoping this will change "very soon" and have been "touched and encouraged" by all the enthusiasm from the Gaelic community.
