(For Phase-1 and Phase-2 courses by default, and for Phase-3 courses per request).
The next update is expected on Sunday, 28th of February at 4:00 pm UTC.
Still on travel...
Previous Update 31-Jan to 7-Feb
On the Hungarian Duolingo FB page one of the contributors (Ferenc Bányai) said that Hu for En speakers should be in Beta within the next couple of days
Andddd they just posted a bigger update on what's going on. :D : https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/hu/en/status Such exciting news from the Hungarian team this week! And thanks, HalbDeutschMann, for your above comment, tipping me off hours ago on how exciting this week's update could be. :)
Actually having native voices, Now we know what we are supposed to sound like XP
Much as I'm looking forward to Hungarian arriving at the soonest, I'd rather wait for all the sentences to have audio, in case it never happens otherwise (like Irish and Ukrainian).
Irish is getting new audio very soon™. It has been approved by the course team, all that's left is for Duolingo central to add it to the course!
That's not what he's talking about though - he means how the audio is only on full sentences, rather than on the single words on the "pick the picture" activities etc.
Unfortunately, for that issue, as it stands with the Duolingo software, the courses that use native recorded audio can't actually have audio on the individual words etc in the same way that the TTS ones can.
It doesn't matter how long anyone waits, it's not possible to have audio on "all" the words on any course using recorded audio under the current software.
I can imagine how they could assign a sound clip to each word, hopefully without recoding too much of the software, but that seems so incredibly time consuming and tedious that I think the majority of us would rather have team Duolingo focus their time and efforts on getting cool new courses out. I also can't imagine languages like Irish having speech recognition, what with all the different dialects...
I do not think it is about the software (after all, they still pre-generate all the mp3s). The thing is, full voice-over for a typical course can easily exceed 40 hours of pure audio, which is pretty resource-consuming. Recording only the sentences, though,—maybe, only partially—is far less demanding.
@Shady - that's interesting to know. I didn't realise they actually generated an MP3 from the TTS for every single instance. This may have implications for some of the languages teaching languages in non-Latin alphabet, where you want learners to hear as much as possible (and e.g. on the picture questions) when they start with the new script, at least for the first few lessons.
Welcome back! Thank you so much for providing these. I missed seeing it last week and am very happy to see today's.
Would it be easier to have multiple people doing the weekly updates. Like they rotate each week. That way if someone is busy there is someone else available to do it.
It looks like there'll be a lot of new courses soon. Excited! Definitely looking forward to Greek coming out soon. I thought it would take a long time. Looking forward to Vietnamese, too.
I just can't believe how the Greek Course is almost ready to go into beta. I remember just a few months ago it looked as if it wouldn't be released for a long time, now it is almost here... Also, congratulations on the Korean Team's swift progress; it has only been in the incubator for a couple weeks and it's already progressed further than the Indonesian course.
Yes it has, anyone can start the course in the beta version anyways =)
Using jitengore's links for Team Vietnamese (https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/vi/en/status), it looks like we'll be able to learn Vietnamese sometime around St. Patty's Day !
Awesome work team! Đội Việt là tuyệt vời !
Guarani team, you're on fire! Felicitaciones. Su progreso ha sido simplemente asombroso. Son lo màximo.
Still under construction :'-( please finish the post it's torture being without these updates lol
I understand how you feel, I am also in same state. But something is better than nothing.
He takes a well-deserved break and is traveling. His posts are still voluntary work and no obligation.
Of course, but the reason people are frustrated is precisely because he does such a good job, if no-one minded when he didn't make them then that would be worse in my view.
English for Thai team has kicked into high gear. Looking forward to your course.
I died waiting for this but came back when I saw it in the forums. Don't ask how that is possible.
I have bookmarked jitengore's profile so I never miss one. B-) But I'm a nice kind of stalker, honest.
I can't see the graph, and haven't been able to see the graphs for a few weeks now. Anyone know what the problem is?
I can't see the graph here either, but the post is still under construction, so it's probably just a placeholder where the graph is going to be when it is ready. The previous graphs are visible to me (but they also usually come later, not when the post is being prepared).
Woot woot! Keep going, Hebrew! =D
