As you can see expressions of weather rarely need a subject. In fact in Finnish you never use a formal subject like it in English.

Ilma is used often instead of sää when describing the qualities of weather. So sayOn kaunis ilma. Sää is reserved for weather in general and it could be thought to refer to weather as a larger system, whereas ilma is about weather as we experience it as people.

Ukko is the Finnish thunder god. The word ukkonen is the diminutive of ukko. Ukonilma translates as "the weather of Ukko".

The verb paleltaa requires a subject in partitive. The verb always looks the same.

  • Minua paleltaa.
  • Sinua paleltaa.
  • Häntä paleltaa.
  • Meitä paleltaa.
  • Teitä paleltaa.
  • Heitä paleltaa.
  • Isoa hevosta paleltaa.
  • Siskoani paleltaa.
  • Poliisia ja asianajajaa paleltaa.

I would like to share a link given to me by FreedomWind. Here you can find books for children in Finnish! Thank you FreedomWind! :)

I've already read one or two of them. I'm not sure if kids' stuff is much easier than anything else, still so many unknown words... but a good start, I guess.

It's even possible that kids book have more difficult vocabulary, because the writers play with words so much.
