Does Portuguese sound like Russian?

I heard that Portuguese sounds like Russian, but I, as a native speaker, can't see it... What do you think, guys? Is it true? I really want to know it

i think if you don't listen to the words but are just hearing a slur, they can sound superficially similar. something about the nasal sounds in portuguese just sounds a bit russian, depending on the speaker.

If you're not used to Portuguese, especially European Portuguese, it can sound a tad bit like Russian.

Both Russian and Portuguese have similar specific sounds.

I was listening to a European Portuguese radio station on my iPad one day when my wife came in the room and asked if I was listening to a Russian radio station.

Portuguese can sound a lot like Russian.

I am a native EU Portuguese speaker and I have, myself, confused both languages many times in public places, when I'm not paying special attention to what's being said. So yes, I think at leat EU Portuguese sounds a lot like Russian.

European Portuguese sounds like Russian.

Hi. American guy, here.

I've spent the past five weeks at an Airbnb in Lisbon with a Portuguese family.

YES, European Portuguese does sound like Russian. To be more descriptive, it sounds like Russians trying to speak Spanish.

Brazilians, interestingly, don't sound Russian-esque; they just sound nasal.

Ahahaha yeah I hear this like a loooooot. I'm thankful that it sounds like Russian because I myself love how Russian sounds (never got the guts to learn it though) I hope you're enjoying your trip ;)

Nein! Portuguese sounds in anyway like Russian. You as native, like me, should know that !

I started the Russian course here in duo, in fact it is very very different.

Native English speaker, here.

Yes, it does.

Are you sure? I googled it and I found many people saying that it sounds. I don't know if the voice of the course is too artificial here, or they were talking about European Portuguese

sim haha, a pronúncia de:

  • Vot Rossiya - here is Russia
  • Gde ty ? - Where are you?
  • Oni v kafe - They are at the café
  • Vy zdes’ - You are here

Não me lembram em nada o português - Brazil

about EP I can't give any opinion

It depends on the person. To me, it does! I can't pinpoint what it is. I do not know any Russian, though, so maybe that is why.

I learned russian in school and I'm learning portuguese on duolingo and don't thinks they sound the same at all but maybe it depends on where you from idk

Native English (US) speaker here. Some of the sounds are similar but they are easily differentiated. There are some words in Russian that could easily be Spanish too though, like Balalaika, which reminds me of Bailar. Portuguese and Russian seem very smooth. Portuguese is smoother. There are a few similar sounds.

The "R" has a very strong sound and vowels are often not pronounced in many words in EU Portuguese, so I guess this is what make EU Portuguese sounds like Russian. Btw Italian, Romanian and Spanish also have the same strong "R pronunciation" (as I use too call it). French and BR Portuguese are the only Romance Languages that don't share similar sounds with Slavic Languages.
