As there are many languages on duolingo i was kind of expecting Afrikaans on this website as my dad recommend this website to me i was hoping this language was included but i was later disappointing to find that this language was no included in the options to learn as it is one of my desired languages.

They should add it. It wouldn't take long to implement at all.

It could take years...have you seen the incubator queue and rates of progress?

At any rate, I imagine if serious volunteers can commit to it then it may end up in the queue eventually, but it would need that first. And since it's not widely spoken there may not be many of those willing to make that serious commitment.

Why do you want to learn it? Why are so many people on this site so keen to learn Afrikaans of all the languages in the world? Is there a political agenda attached to this?

That is rather an odd question. I can assure you that my taking the Turkish course does not indicate any stance on Mr Erdogan or the Kurdish question. My interest in the Irish course should not be taken as any sort of stance on Northern Ireland. I'll probably do the Russian course at a certain point, just as a refresher, though that should not be taken as any sort of endorsement of Mr Putin or his policies, any more than my finishing the Ukrainian course was. And if we get an Afrikaans course, I will most certainly be interested in it, though to impute some sort of political agenda to me based on that would be not only unwarranted ,but indeed, insulting.

As to the number of speakers, Afrikaans appears to have about 7 million, as opposed to the 350,000 of Icelandic and the 700,000 or so of Welsh. There are supposedly a million speakers of Irish and 1.5 million of Occitan, but I am pretty skeptical of both those numbers. I certainly do not question anyone's interest in learning those languages. Indeed, I'd love to see Estonian, Sorbian, Mordvin, and a host of other rather small languages, though I certainly would also be interested in languages like Bengali or Tamil, whose numbers dwarf those of most European languages.

I'd love to re-learn Afrikaans.. I already know how to speak it, since it's my first language, but when it comes to writing, i'm totally lost. I've tried to pick it up, but it just wont stick. It would be great if it got turned into a course. I love the language. ^.^
