SURVIVAL MODE

Hi everyone! :)

I know this topic has already been discussed but I would really like to see some changes in the Lesson Practice.

First of all, the clock should stop once you confirm your answer, so that you can see your mistake when you get the translation wrong.

There should be a SURVIVAL MODE where you are given a sentence in english and you must translate into the language that you are currently learning. This mode should also give you one coin for every sentence you get right, and allow you to continue as long as you do not fail once. Then, for instance, for every 30 correct translations in a row, we could get 1 lingot as a prize. It would be even more cool if the website could keep track of your personal top records and it displayed something like "Record to beat: 50.".

This SURVIVAL MODE on the app would be a good way to get some points without being forced to work on 20 exercises and be rewarded with only 10 points. In my opinion, to be limited to get 10 points at a time when we are using the app is a bit frustrating. If the clock is the problem, then take us points for every mistake. Straight to the point: correct answer +1, wrong answer -1.

Concerning the weekly graphic that shows your weekly performance, I have also a suggestion. Why not showing the graphic of two other users (the friend immediately above you and the one immediately under you in the overall ranking) at the same time? Then you would be able to compare your weekly performance with them and get an extra kick.

My last suggestion for improvement is a RESTART button when we are taking lessons. Sometimes I feel like starting a lesson all over again. Right now I must quit it, look for the lesson again and restart. It would be really cool if I could just restart the whole lesson with a simple click.

I do not expect you to change all these things overnight, but it would be amazing if they could be kept in mind for the future.

Thanks a lot for your job! I really appreciate all the effort you put into Duolingo's concept.

Have a nice day! :) It's FRIDAY! Yaaaay!

If it costs lingots, it'd be a nice lingot sink.

On the website, you can always restart a lesson by hitting reload.

I have never thought about it. Thanks for your feedback! Anyway, it would be great to be able to restart it on the app.

There is already a quit, they just need to add another option to the confirmation dialog. Quit, restart, or cancel.

I like all your ideas. I'd especially like the clock stopped when an answer is submitted or at the very least if I decide I want to read the discussion for that sentence. If it's just checking my mistakes they're bolded and I can usually just glance and see, but sometimes I want more explanations and for that I go to the discussion.

I like your ideas a lot. One additional suggestion.

When translating the sentences and keeping the record # without fails, add levels to encourage you. Once the user hits 5 correct translations, they get a lingot and the next level to get a lingot is 10 correct translations, etc.. You can only get a lingot for hitting a level once.

The only thing I really would like changed on Timed Practice is for the time bonus to be 10 seconds instead of 6. Even on lessons I know well, I can only last up to 4 or 5 questions. It's just too little time. I feel 10 seconds would make it perfect.

I do like the survival mode suggestion as well as the hidden weekly graphic comparison suggestion, which would help encourage extrinsic motivation among users, but I feel that penalizing mistakes is not an optimal method of encouraging the learning of multiple languages, or really learning anything in general.

Hitting a user with penalties for attempting to answer a question but getting it incorrect reinforces the thought that one should only try the things they are absolutely sure they know, which is not the point of this app at all. The current state of getting an answer wrong, namely, the red styling and the wrong answer sound, should be sufficient penalization (I know I get aggravated when I'm incorrect for numerous reasons).

Otherwise, though, it's a good suggestion and would certainly expand the number of ways a user could customize the experience to their own liking while still learning their language(s) of choice.

Sure. I kinda of agree with you but I suggested that in case the problem is the clock. Currently we only get points if we train under the pressure of the clock. On the app it's a bit silly to have a clock since it takes more time to type. And I would really like to have the chance to get a couple of points when I am training on the app, not only groups of 10 points. So if that was an option, I'd gladly take it. :) All in all, I wish we could practice on the app and get single points as we get on the website.

Ah, I see what you mean. It would be nice to have another way to get smaller increments of points on mobile, and I never really noticed timed mode didn't exist on the app since I favor the normal method of learning. So I agree with you. :)

Survival mode would be amazing. I would love to have a marathon practice session without a break or interruption. I really zone out when practicing, and being stopped and awarded some coins every few minutes breaks the flow. Just imagine how intense it would be if you build up a long streak!

I love the survival mode suggestion and the suggestion to stop the clock when a sentence is submitted. It is even better than showing the mistakes at the end. I would learn so much more.

Your Idea is epic, I really like the lingots, maybe 1 per 10 correct

That would be really cool, almost like the immersion, but for personal use ☺

Survival mode is a great idea. Another advantage I see to it is that you get to practice on a single type of exercise - translating English into the other language - which I see as one of the more difficult types of exercise. I think doing this repeatedly would help a lot. (Maybe others disagree though?)

I agree with you. I have more problems translating from english to french (for example) than the other way around. There are a lot of words that you think you know, but when you are asked to translate from english into the language you are learning, then you realize that you do not remember it. :P

Survival mode is amazing idea! However I think it could be best if survival itself has 2 modes - 1 giving you questions from all material you have covered and 2 from material you have to strengthen - then instead of countless 20 question sessions that you know well you could top up your bars in one long one. Also, to make things more interesting the system should award you a heart up to 3 every 10-20 questions or so to make surviving more rewarding and give you some wiggle room - the system has some unaccounted for translations now and again. So the system should give you an endless string of questions until you deplete your 3 hearts.

I like your survival mode a lot! I would go more into gaming here. How about three degrees of survival mode. Easy, medium and hard. The difference would be the probability of getting a heart refill. In Easy Mode I would give a probability auf 20 % for each question to be a heart refill question (this would be visible even before you answer the question). If you answer it correct you get the heart. In Medium it would be 10% and in hard no refill.

One round costs 1 lingot and if you manage to get more than 30 Questions right you get your lingot back.

Not sure if I would want to give coins for correct answers. Maybe in medium and easy only partly (like 2 correct answerts = 1 coin in medium and 4 correct answers=1 coin in easy).

Or an option to buy a heart potion mid-lesson.... that would've saved me a lot of times.

It would be great. Anything to help us stay motivated and work hard.
