Tu used in Brazilian portuguese?

Is "Tu" used at all in Brazilian Portuguese? While I was learning Portuguese in college we didn't even bother with conjugating verbs with "Tu" since, according to my carioca professor, it only applies to continental Portuguese.

You don't have to bother with "tu" in Brazil, because if you say "você" everybody will understand you. But your teacher should know better than to say it only applies to European Portuguese, because it's still widely used in the south and northeast regions of Brazil.

Yeah "tu" is mainly associated with European Portuguese, however, there are some Brazilian Portuguese dialects or regional differences (Rio Grande do Sul for example), where "tu" is used.
