I have another idea that I wish to share...

First, I understand that you at Duolingo want to help translate the web while offering free language learning to people, but you're also a business that needs to generate some income. Anyways that's logical, but I must say that I really admire that you're making such a difference in the world and that's what makes me so enthusiastic about Duolingo. There is another organisation that's a bit similar to yours, it's called Khan Academy. I am sure that many of you know it (otherwise, google it).

I am active there too and I know they want to translate their website and videos to different languages so people around the world can educate themselves about a lot of topics, such as chemistry, physics, etc. They already have some partners (like Crash Course and Smart History for example) and let's not forget that they are supported by Google and the Gates Foundation.

My point is that I see that you at Duolingo really have something to offer for them; Duolingo can translate their videos and materials very quickly, something they'd love to see, and they may have a budget for this and/or they can advertise Duolingo because it fits in with their goal to bring education to the world.

I just think you'd make a great couple! ;)

I am curious what you think of this idea. Feel free to + or - this post, but please also join the discussion because I am interested to hear your voice :). And does anybody else have similar ideas? What would be a good partner for Duolingo?

Honestly, I'm loving this idea. If there's one thing I think that Khan Academy could offer to Duolingo, it's the added learning tool of educational videos. I think we've all come across problems involving grammar in our chosen learned language that Duo hasn't gotten around to explaining properly. Khan Academy-style videos could go a long way towards filling the gap.

Can't agree with that enough. Especially at the later lessons [ahem subjunctive] nobody understands. I was forced to watch Professor Jason, which really helped, although I would rather Duolingo to cover it anyway.

I like this post. So many users seem to think Duolingo can and will be everything. Instead there are such a huge range of methods for learning a language, and the best thing a learner can do is employ several of them (and even rotate them to alleviate boredom).

It would actually be a bad thing if Duolingo did too much... there is a risk of becoming streak and lingot and gold coin dependent, prioritising Duolingo over other valuable methods for fear of breaking a streak, when in fact other methods should indeed take priority at various times in the learning process.

Such a partnership sounds like a very good idea actually! It would be mutually beneficial to both websites, as you've stated, as it might help the newer duolingo users such as myself in working with potentially simpler sentences and words that aren't too challenging to look into even if they aren't known to beginners at the time. Khan Academy would also become a good deal more accessible, and the demographic which seems to need the site the most are the ones in countries where education is not so widespread and those of lower income brackets, both groups who may have more variety in the languages that they speak which aren't English.

I hope the staff looks into the potential of a partnership, or at least comments with some thoughts on the matter.

I thought Khan Academy already had translation partners? Much of their content already has very high quality translations.

https://www.duolingo.com/trinacrium

People can volunteer to translate Khan Academy content, and people are doing that. I also think that they made the entire site available in Spanish as well. While all of this is true, not everything is translated. The translation of the content would accelerate very quickly if Duolingo users began translating it. Another point is that new content is added on a very regular basis. This would be made available very quickly to speakers of other languages. They could also make the entire site available in languages besides Spanish and English. As others have stated, we could also use the translated content to help us learn languages (and other topics if we understand it well enough!).

I found out today this Youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/bookboxinc - it has stories for children in different languages with subs. There are 30 languages now, but not all videos are done in all languages.

This is different thing and smaller than Khan Academy, but I think it would be really fun to help them and create subtitles for more languages.

The big plus of it is that those stories are very easy to understand even if you don't understand every single word and they should be pretty easy to translate for Duolingists :)

Khan Academy is another resource that I'm dying to start using as soon as I have enough time. Just like you said, their goal is just as noble as Duolingo's and I think it would be wonderful to be able to lend them a hand while we brush up our language skills.

I'd be really happy if, somewhere in the future, both organisations would walk hand on hand and mutually help each other :)

I was inspired by Khan Academy two years ago to create videos to teach my students French grammar, they love them and can replay them as many times as they want without having to ask me to explain again.

https://www.duolingo.com/ThierryUwi

Did you use this videos in your classroom? Do you see a role of technologies like duolingo in the foreign language classrooms? Khan Academy is being used in more and more schools, but it is for math and sciences. I am really interested in how language teachers use technology in their classroom or for homework. Thank you.

https://www.duolingo.com/scottann

Absolutely, I have used flexible and mixed media learning in the classroom for about 8 years, mainly to introduce authentic material (audio-oral) and get the students to interact. with the material and between themselves. We have developed online exercises (a bit like some of Duolingo multiple choice and mix and match exercises) and I have developed little videos (inspired by Khan Academy ones) to explain grammar with moving examples, drawings, etc., that they can watch if they don't understand in class, this with simple technology like Screenchomp and at very little cost.

https://www.duolingo.com/ThierryUwi

Though it's been 2 months, I wanted to thank you for sharing. I've been talking to language teachers here in Washington, DC, and I've witnessed a lot of activities in the classroom and that search for authentic material kept coming up time and time again. And the small group activities to get students to interact is also something most teachers try to squeeze in regularly.

Cool that you like Khan Academy too! Before using the site I wasn't good at mathematics, chemistry and physics, and more important I was not confident at all about my ability to understand these topics, but though using the site I now say that I understand those subject a lot better, and not only that, I am much more confident in my ability to learn more about these subjects and I actually like learning now. Duolingo has had a similar effect, I've become much more confident in my ability to learn languages! :)

But you are right, you need to invest some time ;). Quite a lot, but if you can find a spare half hour in your day you'll progress quickly. And it's fun too!

Ahmm... Kahn Academy can give you free general-knowledge, which is nice, but not enough if you study for an actual test or exam. (I say that as a computer-science student who watched linear alebra lessons in Kahn Acadmy. Maybe it helps more in school-level math).

I think this would be a great idea simply because Khan Academy has absolutely no foreign language areas. Khan Academy would be able to make helpful videos of difficult pronunciations and grammar, and Duolingo can help them translate their material. In addition, KA students would be the perfect translators for scientific and technical websites with a lot of jargon that the average Duolingoer doesn't know. This would expand Duolingo's translation options while increasing their translators.

Iran.

I don't get sanctions. are they aiming at innocent people or government? the people are already getting much torture from government itself. these educations can help many people here to grow intellectually which eventually leads to overthrow of those above...isn't that a good news for west? it's not first time google bullying us for internet thing...google play is one for example, still nobody can't use it. (gmail is no exception; they pretend to advocate free information but they sell our messages to gov as well) other stuff, in real life, we lack some crucial medicine, high quality raw materials and products which led to low welfare and high unemployment and inflation in the country...sanctions imposed by west have been used by them as a mean to abuse rather than as a help..... but I don't think this is an appropriate place to say these, but letting you all know a bit it's no bed of roses here and to give lil insight, that's all.

all in all, I thank duolingo isn't under rule of google's ever growing power and I hope it remains true to its motto in whole eternity and independent; being free forever and for all. happy new year in advance to all.

Hello, please take a look at the "KA Lite" project. In short, that is an effort to provide a lite version of KA which works offline.

http://kalite.adhocsync.com/

You download and install the software. Download the videos (they provide them through a torrent). Setup and launch it. And then it is possible to use it without internet. By the way, videos are (re)compressed to reduce their size.

Of course it does not provide all the fancy things which are available on the full KA website. But you will get access to the main content, related to the videos and exercises.

Hope you enjoy it.

Happy new year, Paulo

I hadn't heard of the Kahn Academy. So I went and had a look....

It gives me only two options - I can sign up as a teacher, or as a parent. There's a button called "Teachers, start here" and there's one called "Parents, start here". As a grown-up who enjoys learning for themselves this isn't a promising start. Rather off-putting in fact. I wouldn't want to launch into a new learning site with a lie.

Duolingo didn't make me pretend to be a teacher or a child to get started.

Thanks. I had a deeper look at the Kahn Academey courses but see that Maths only goes to "US-8th grade" - which is the level we'd expect 13-year-olds to be at in the UK.

There's always confusion between the US and UK descriptions of schooling as what we in the UK call high school is called "College" in the US. The level of the Kahn courses seem a bit low to be of interest to adults - the Biology unit introduces itself as "Covers topics seen in a first year college or high school biology course." - again that would be aged rather young, at 11.

I can see it's a great resource for people who maybe missed out an their education. But compared to Duolingo which reaches what would be AS Level in the UK (aged 17-18) the two don't seem very compatible.
