Isn't this "the girls are eating no lime"? If the negation is related to the verb, shouldn't it be "niet eten"?

You can think of geen as the negative form of een:

  • ik eet een limoen = I eat a lime
  • ik eet geen limoen = I eat no lime/I don't eat a lime
