In Russia, people don't write Cyrillic block letters. At all. Russian (and other languages written with the Cyrillic script) is written using a cursive system. It is the standard handwriting system, and used by everyone. Here is a link to a guide to Russian handwriting: http://www.russianforeveryone.com/RufeA/Lessons/Introduction/Alphabet/Alphabet.htm

It can be confusing at first, as the cursive letters don't always correspond directly to the block letters (e.g. "т" in Cyrillic cursive looks like "m" in English cursive), but, with plenty of practice, it'll be as natural to you as our own cursive.

I really should learn cursive for Cyrillic script. I can already write cursive in the Latin script, so I think it should be a little bit familiar to me....

It should be pretty familiar. Also, it's important to learn the Cyrillic cursive because it's used both in hand-written documents and stylized signs and other "irregular" written constructs.

And Russian italics in regular text use the cursive handwriting shapes of letters when they differ from the regular printed letters.

Nah, I do, some of my friends with really ugly and illegible cursive also tend to write in block or semi-cursive letters. Nevertheless, it doesn't change the fact that at least learning to read cursive is still a very good idea!

This way doctors write in Russia. We joke: it is written specifically to not be understood. hahaha.

They must be attending the same medical schools as American doctors.

I wanted to post here a sample of my handwriting, because I do write in block letters, but can't figure out how to post a picture here. Will that work? https://scontent.fmel1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10356766_1317635961586522_320711169340954440_n.jpg?oh=ba3e7851238979e42e1f4b39c5ddc013=575760BD It says: "I write in block letters and this is my regular handwriting. We are not many but we exist!" And YES, I can write quickly. And NO, this is not what they taught us in school. I had to fight for my right to do this in school. Now no one cares, of course. But please be aware that some people do use block letters in real life handwriting.
