What are some ways other than gamification to motivate people to do more lessons and translations?

While gamification may motivate many people for a while, I think other approaches could be combined with it to motivate most people even more.

For example, Duolingo could motivate people to do more translations by giving instant feedback on how their translation compares to others — not just in terms of a score but by showing actual similarities and differences in the translations.

I would love to be able to see a list of recent translations I did along with how it was rated by others and what the "best" translation was.

I'd actually like to see MORE gamification. What's the max level? How are other users doing? Who's the top user? How am I doing, am I growing faster than most other users? Stack Overflow has some cool metrics like this.
