Sentence discussion windows during skill lessons sometimes won't open.
Does anyone know why this occurs? Often if I restart the lesson or when I get to the next one the discussion windows begin to work again. Other times I have to switch languages (this recently happened with Polish). It can happen after a few of the sentences and remains non-functional until the lesson is completed. Is this a website issue or something to do with my browser, tabs open, etc.?
As far as I know, the reason is not known (but the issue is known).
Would you have examples of (exact) exercises/sentences (and which course, for each example, since I see your following various ;)) for which it happened.
It's happening to me right now in German: Dat. Pron. skill 3/3 -- The first sentence let me open the discussion window and then for everything after that, the windows won't open. Very problematic as I keep a notes doc and the main purpose is to copy over helpful comments under the sentences I just learned/worked on.
What was the exact first sentence/exercise for which it didn't load?
I suspect it could be linked to some exercise discussion not loading when you try to access them from the forum. So I'd like to check that hypothesis. To potentially write a bur report to Duo to update my bug report about those things.
it has nothing to do with the forums, it's all about the discussions embedded in each skill lesson. I can't recall the first exercise as it started happening weeks ago and I practice every day. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times the problem is rampant.
Thx for the two examples!
Well, tryong to access both sentence discussions here "Wir helfen unseren Großeltern." and here "Du bist mein Onkel" doesn't work.
While accessing "Er antwortet seinem Vater." (here) and "Meine Nichte schläft." (here) do work.
Thus it goes in the direction of my guess of a same behind bug! Or, at least, it doesn't exclude my guess. ;)
I'm writing to Duo!
This happens to me often in many languages. Should I report it as a problem when the discussions do not open in a certain problem?
But, the "discussions embedded in each skill lesson" may actually be stored in the same place as the forums; to find them, one goes to search in the forums. I suspect they just happen to be exposed in the skill lessons.
Indeed, they are the same. That's why I asked (and explained why ;)) and why I'd like the exact exercise for which it starts to to do it
it has nothing to do with the forums, it's all about the discussions embedded in each skill lesson.
Sentence discussions embedded are the exact same as the sentences discussions accessible in the forum.
So it can have something to do with the forum (if we're unlucky it has nothing to do and thus they are two separate bugs and thus longer for Duo to solve both ;) ).
Could you share here the first exercise/sentence (exact sentence) for with which it starts to not work next time it happens to you?
Actually I can recall from this lesson (German Dat. Pron. 3/3) as it's in my notes:
Er antwortet seinem Vater. -- this was first sentence and the discussion worked. Wir helfen unseren Großeltern. - this was the second sentence and the discussion didn't work. Nothing after this worked either (which is always the case with this problem--once it starts it won't resolve until the next sentence at the earliest).
next lesson Family 1/3 Meine Nichte schläft. -- discussion worked Du bist mein Onkel. - next sentence, discussion didn't work
Yes, but you can access the lesson discussions from the forum, just switch to the language forum for example "German from English" and then click on "Sentences". When this happens to me, I write down each sentence and then I go to this access point and type in each sentence into the search field and see the discussion there. It is annoying and a bit longer, but better than doing without the lesson discussions.
It will even bring up the other forms, multiple choice, translating both directions, etc. So, click on the one you need. You can always search again and click on the next one.
German is not a new course, but they did add a whole lot of new content to it, so I have been experiencing it there also.
Edit to az_p: yes, the first sentence will sometimes still not work from the forum discussion search, but the rest of them which still are blocked from the lesson usually work. Sometimes there is a problem with more than one sentence, but more work than don't. Later, when I check back the first sentence may work again. This is a clue for the people who need to fix this and so we should keep them updated.
Excellent, az_p! We should list all the links that are not working here!
It is super arduous, and also doesn't work sometimes (I have no idea why). It seems that the sentences which cause the problem to start are also the sentences which you cannot manually look up in the forums.
What's your suggestion?
To join the ranks of those who reported it. ;)
Unfortunately there is nothing more to do: the issue is on Duo side, we can't do anything on ours.
I did notice it happening more often in the Polish course at some point. But again, it wasn't constant and some lessons didn't have the problem.
It happens to me too, which is really annoying since the comments provide explanations most of the time.
Six months later and the problem still goes on. It happens sometimes to me. The comments aren't able to be opened (the button simply doesn't work). Also, sometimes I cannot see the comments even with the link. For example, this one: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/16592609. In Firefox and in Chrome, it only appears the topbar, but the page doesn't load, and in IE appears the "Error 404" (but a couple of minutes ago, someone wrote there, because Duolingo sent me a message to the email). Then...? What's really happening? Is it very difficult to find the issue? Hope they can solve it soon.
I have seen this problem also. I think the newer languages especially those in Beta are more plagued by this. I always wondered if maybe when there is an update or fix being done if we are then unable to access it until they are done. The courses which have been around longer don't need as much fixing and so it doesn't really happen. It has happened on the web and from my android phone. I used to report it at every sentence, but I got tired of that so I report it every lesson that it happens in. When reporting this in the window, you need to let them know which sentence it started with if you can and which lesson it is in as the report is not well linked. If you can remember anything about the last time you were able to open the discussion page, that might also help to figure out what triggers this. Sometimes, I will feel upset "I just replied in the last discussion.", did I do something wrong? Other times, it just happens out of the blue.
I'll start reporting the problem. I hadn't thought to do it as I wasn't sure if the problem had to do with my browser or something
should I move it back to the Duo forum
No, it's perfect in TBS forum. TBS forum is meant for discussion related to glitches and bugs. ("Duolingo"/General forum isn't ;)).
Thx for having moved it!
Oh, and you can edit the original discussion at the top and change the topic to Troubleshooting or make a new one for that forum.
Indeed, good catch!
Better to "change"/move the discussion than create a duplicate. ;)
Yes, but I imagine that we might find more people who have encountered this in "Duolingo" if you need more data about the problem, while more people who can help would check "Troubleshooting".
Edit: No leave it there. Perhaps later, if it is still unresolved the troubleshooting team can do a general inquiry. They could ask specific questions that we may not have thought of and put a link to this one for information.
I just moved it to Troubleshooting... should I move it back to the Duo forum, or do one of you want to make a duplicate/ new thread in oder keep this going on the main Duo forum?
But a duplicate is:
- not very compliant with guidelines
- separate the info into two discussions, harder to follow.
I agree, so that's why I said--if someone else wants to post in the main forum just to make sure it reaches people, feel free. Or maybe do a follow-up after some time has passed...
I assumed it was an issue with the servers timing out, and therefore naturally sporadic, and more likely to occur with longer discussions.
Longer or shorter discussions do not seem to matter. I used to report the "Discuss sentence (3) for whatever sentence was not opening or whatever number was there, so that they could see it was not an empty discussion that I was talking about. So I remember, that the number did not seem to matter.
