Protect our users!

Hi everyone! I've been doing Duolingo for a while now, and it's going pretty good. I like reading the conversations on sentences, and they make me laugh. However, I have been seeing a lot of language in the comments recently. I would like to remind everyone that there are a lot of young people using Duolingo. If you could please avoid using all instances of foul language, that would be great! this should be a moderator's job, but I haven't seen them saying much) Thanks!

Normally, when there's an issue like this, it seems that the moderators will post a warning on their activity stream rather than call them out in public. If you see something, you should report to a moderator if you think that they've missed seeing the post.

Here's a list of moderators: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/13007546

Just send them a message to their activity stream.

You are assuming it's not the young people using foul language?

Young people use foul language a lot! I wish people just didn't use foul language so the next generations won't learn them, and then bad words would just die out...

I'm assuming that there are enough young people to take a stance. Also, there are people who are uncomfortable or deterred by language.

That's overkill at this point. It's not an issue if you make a huge mistake and accidentally say "❤❤❤❤❤❤". Moderators already have enough problems dealing with people who use it consistently, but to start punishing those who clearly only meant it as a one time thing, that's a little much. I'm not saying we shouldn't take action for those who mean it. Kids, yeah there on Duolingo, but the majority of them are in High School or above, and old enough to comprehend it's nature here on Duolingo.

It may also be what type of environment you grew up in. See, in my family, Sicilians don't usually keep it clean. We cuss a lot. So, for some it can be just a normality for them, and they don't see it as bad to them.

I'm less than 16. I saw someone who is less than 10. And I'm not saying that people should be punished, just asking them to refrain from 'cussing'

Llyod, just for the sake of the community, I would recommend you to not list your age on the Forums. It can be very dangerous to mention that here.

I'm entirely in agreement with this, as a lot of children use this site, but my incredibly picky brain is forcing me to ask: what exactly are we protecting people from?
