Whatever happened to Teach Yourself Esperanto?

I was searching around Amazon and found a textbook that was titled "Esperanto (Teach Yourself)". I searched it up online and tried to see if any images existed and I saw that it was a book published by Teach Yourself, the publishing company. I was surprised that it had been in print up until the 90s, when I'm assuming it went out of print. I was thinking how wonderful it'd be if Teach Yourself republished it for this new wave of Esperanto students (I have a copy of Teach Yourself Dutch, and I love it.). Is there anything we could do to try to get Teach Yourself to consider publishing it again? Start a petition?

rhythmixed, ok, I talked with my contact at Teach Yourself and she said that this thread inspired her to get the ball rolling on the new Teach Yourself Esperanto! She said that If you could write on their official facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tyopenroad/ she could reply to you there. Thanks! :)

Last year at the Polyglot Conference in NYC, I talked with a rep from TY who said they're considering updating the book and reprinting it. I followed up with her afterwards and didn't hear back, although I can imagine she was really busy right after the conference and overlooked it. In any case, I'll let her know about this thread! :)

Esperanto is one of the languages that was in the original series of 'Teach Yourself' books that never got revised/re-written for the current series (the others being Yoruba, Hausa, Maltese and Samoan). I presume that the company didn't think there was enough demand for it to revise it in the late 90s; I'm sure there's no shortage of qualified people who would be very happy to write an updated version.

If you do buy a paper copy, try to find the hardback edition—the small, paperback editions of the 80s and 90s are terribly-bound books that fall to bits very easily!

I'm afraid I only have the book. But it's one of those books that (literally) neglects to tell the reader how to say 'hello'; I have another book called 'Learn Maltese, Why Not?' by Joseph Vella which I found much more helpful.

I never realised Esperanto was re-written for that edition; for quite a few other languages, TY just took exactly the same content of the old book and dropped it into the new format.
The one I have is by John Cresswell & John Hartley. Compared with the confusing and disorganised grammar-rambles some of the old TY books can be, it is pretty well-laid-out, clear and well-written.
I shall have to look out for the 1987 edition now, however.

The story I heard is that when the Teach Yourself series was purchased by a U.S. based publishing firm (from the original U.K. based firm) was when the "less popular" titles were dropped from the lineup. I love the T.Y. Esperanto book. I have the original hard-back edition written back in the 1950s, as well as the paperback 3rd edition, the one I learned from. I also have the cassette tapes that go with the 3rd edition. (And yes, my 3rd edition paperback is held together with glue, tape, and rubber bands).

I know that Esperanto was suppressed under McCarthyism because it was seen to be used by communists and anarchists to conspire against the government with

Tinfoil hats on lads; who reckons there's a reason it was dropped from the Teach Yourself course when it was transferred to a US firm in the 50s?

I believe it was purchased by the U.S. Firm in the early 2000s. I think it had more to do with profit. They couldn't see publishing a book for which the purchase numbers were low. That's OK, the PDF is perfectly readable on my tablet.

When I started with Esperanto in 1997, I'd see TYE at various bookstores around town (I have a copy.) I always wondered if the book store ordered it on accident or whether it came as part of a bulk order. In any event, it was a good advertisement for Esperanto. I'd noticed that occasionally the book would be gone from the shelf, so I figured someone bought it. It makes me wonder what happened to those copies that were sold. Who bought them? Who did they speak Esperanto with?

I used to buy multiple copies for people to use in classes i taught. Many of the students were or became members in local Esperanto clubs, where we would sit around and speak Eo or have parties, dinners, etc. It's a well rounded book and i have multiple copies. If they were going to re-do it I would volunteer to help :) For Usonanoj I also like the Richardson textbook which seems to be somewhat available.

Just back from NASK where I saw a young woman learning from this book. She'd gotten it from Amazon and didn' t seem to know that it was a "rare book" at this point. :-)

Yeah, it's crazy. I bought Teach Yourself Esperanto, 3rd Ed. in 2010 from Amazon for about $25. I've seen the price spike much higher than that, perhaps $80 if memory serves. It's currently (JAN 2018) selling for about $40. That's just nuts.

Hi everyone, I contacted Teach Yourself to ask them if they intended to publish a new version of TY Esperanto. They just replied that an updated version called “Complete Esperanto” should be published in September this year.

The official price of the new book is crazy expensive. I've heard a rumor that EAB will have it for much less. The new book is not connected with the old one. I'm going to "wait and see" here.

Chafre, Thank you for asking my favorite question :) "Teach Yourself Esperanto" has recently become available, for free use, as a searchable, well formatted "e-book." [It is not downloadable; I suspect it will become sold as an e-book.] <https://issuu.com/search?q=esperanto>

"Complete Esperanto" is, as a new book, being co-authored by Tim Owen, ("Esperanto Association of Britain") and well known polyglot, Judith Meyer. I'm curious to see it; I love TYE.

Dawsfive, Thanks to your contribution, I now have Dropbox! Of course, I viewed the pdf. This textbook, as we know, was published in 1907. Esperanto has evolved ! ... I heartily recommend "Teach Yourself Esperanto." An example, freely viewable, (in "E-Pub style") is readily useable. ... https://issuu.com/search?=esperanto
