why "to the front" and not "in the front"?

From my understandïng, "Not to the front" is what you would shout if someone tries to go to the front and you want to stop him. In german this is "Nicht nach vorne."

"Not in the front" is a possible answer if someone asks you where you are. In german this is "Nicht vorne".

Right--"nach vorne" is a direction (implying motion), whereas simply "vorne" is a location. Like the difference between "into" and "in" in English.
