Llwyd comes from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“pale”), of which also come English fallow (color) and pale (a Latin borrowing from pallidus), Ancient Greek πελιτνός (pelitnós, "livid, pallid"), Armenian ալիք (alikʿ, "wave", formerly "gray hair") and Sanskrit पलित (palitá, "grey, hoary, old, aged").
