Seek out local speakers

Hi folks. This has been on my mind a lot. I know it's not easy, but I would really like to encourage folks to seek out local Esperanto speakers. It's never too early. It can really help you progress.

For better or worse, there's no one-stop way to find local speakers. I think Chatterplot is a good site. Your national association may have a directory. Facebook can be a useful tool. I would start with Google - searching for your city name plus "Esperanto."

The other thing is not to give up. I'm coming up on 19 years of speaking Esperanto and I'm still finding out that there are people near me who think they're the only one who speak it. If you don't find a group in your town, find the nearest group and contact them - in case anybody else does the same. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Finally, it's true that a local group quite often depends on a single person. Maybe that person is you. It takes at least one person to say "hey I'm here" and "let's meet up next Friday" to stir up a little activity.

I didn't find any group in my town, I planned on starting it myself when I'll be confident enough (just started learning it on Duo when it was released, but I'm more focused on German for now).

Like I said -- you might consider contacting someone in another city just to let them know you're interested in hearing from people. There's a very active group in Montreal. We get many from there at A.R.E. on Lake George in the fall (want to come too?). I hope you know about Mekaro coming up soon. If I can get my passports in time, I'll be there.

I'm fairly sure I've met some folks from Quebec City. I can't recall for sure at the moment.

Yes, I though about contacting the local Montreal group later. Oh! And I'm sure I'm not alone in Quebec City, I've just got to find them, as you say. ;-) I just didn't find an organised group, yet.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the Mekaro (I'll be just landing from a 1 month trip in Europe), but I'll bookmark the esperanto societo kebekia website for further meetings around the province, and see if I can free myself to go to one.

When you're in Europe, you can look up local groups while you're here! Berlin most likely has the most active Esperanto scene. You can find our calendar here: http://www.esperanto.berlin

We stopped by a Berlin Esperanto meetup when we were in Germany last year. Glad that we did! I recommended checking meetup.com for Esperantist groups whenever you travel - great way to meet folks! You can always post a comment and maybe someone will be around to meet up for coffee.

I just noticed you've been kidding me : Columbus day in the US and Thanksgiving in Canada are always celebrated on the same day : the second Monday of October.

For a short moment I though it was a happy coincidence this year, then looked into it... I guess you guys picked that date since the first event to facilitate participation from both sides of the border!

Anyway, I've subscribed to both the FB event and the official registration form for the ARE. I'll be there! I'll see if anyone wants to ride-share from Quebec or Montreal (the shortest route is through the south shore of Montreal anyway).

Yes. I was trying to be cute. As it turns out, Columbus Day is not a huge holidy in the US and most people have to take it off by special request. The kids tend to have it off from school., though. I think you asked other questions. I'll see if I can reply to your registration form since I'd trather handle some of these details by e-mail.

Sounds great, although Columbus day isn't a holiday in Canada, I could either take a day off or leave a day early... I'll put it on my calendar!

Great news! We've decided to have it on Canadian Thanksgiving instead of Columbus Day this year. :-)

There is a group in Atlanta near me. They even have a small website which says they meet at a local pub monthly, but it doesn't appear that they have met in the past 3 months. I'm really nervous to go, though. Anybody have any stories (or links to stories) about the first time meeting up with the local group?

It's natural to feel nervous. Often times contact from someone new is enough encouragement for the "veterans" to set up a meeting. Check out this thread which includes a before and after.

I've been to the Atlanta club before. They're really nice. And funny enough, I believe Randy was the first Esperanto speaker I spoke to on the phone and I was a complete beginner and he was really friendly. Just contact the club and I'm sure they'll be accommodating. :)

As Salivanto says, contact from you would probably do the trick. I noticed on the website there is a contact email address. Take a chance. I've met the gentleman whose address is on the site. He's a great guy.

For everyone else, don't forget to check out Meetup in your area or contact your local regional or national Esperanto organization.

Also I am really enjoying your videos and you've made real progress in just a few weeks. You obviously have the desire to learn and the ability to put the work in, and there are people waiting to help and support you. So ask for help! And then let us know in a new video how it all works out.

I've met Randy from Atlanta as well -- probably about the same time (give or take a year or two) when I last saw Lunjo. :-)

I think you're right. And we will meet again in Granbio! (passports pending) It's been something like ten years, I think. Feels like yesterday...

I never would have guessed that there were other esperanto speakers in my area other than myself. There's an esperanto club near me with at least 3-7 people, but their website hasn't been active at all since 2006. After 2006 it seems that they just abruptly stopped for some reason. Although I could definitely meet them, I kind of want someone who is closer to my age to talk to. I'm not even a legal adult yet and it seems that everybody who is in the club (if it is still running) is nowhere near my age.
