UPDATE! [Tree 2.0] arriving soon to a Norwegian course near you!
We have finished work on our second tree version. While new users will be the first to experience the new tree, after a brief testing period, all users will have access if the testing is successful. What a wonderful day in Duolingo Norwegian history!
UPDATE APRIL 19: The new tree has been released to HALF of all users. Have fun trying it out if it's available to you!
-Det norske laget
Hopefully you'll get into the A/B test!
We were limited to three alpha tester spots, and biased as I am I ended up picking only felines. ;)
Discrimination! But serious, the testers you selected are clearly outstanding language learners with a lot of time, required for such a task. I wouldn't be able to do that, neither having the time and/or the skills. Good luck with the next step, it is exciting, though, what you are all getting accomplished!
Initially, yes. But if it looks promising, then the test is expanded to old users as well:
"If metrics look good for new learners, the test will be expanded to all learners, including existing students in the course (and those learners will get a notification that their tree has changed)."
Just wondering whether such an 'upgrade' of a Duolingo course has ever been done before? As a programmer I would get nervous if the transition will go smoothly for existing learners... in IT, anything can go wrong, and often where you least expect it ....
Yes, tree versioning has been tested for a while now, and is considered to be stable and functioning. Some of the legacy courses are several tree versions ahead of us.
Of course that doesn't mean that everything's guaranteed to work flawlessly, but if user progress were to be impacted in any way other than intended I believe they'd be able to do a rollback.
thank you for trusting us :) I was honoured to contribute as well. And there are no words to describe the tree's awesomeness ^^
I have been very impressed with how well supported the Norwegian course is. Thank you all for your hard work!
I finished the original tree a few months ago, and am really looking forward to the revised and expanded tree.
Wow! Great news. New experience. I guess I'll be able to learn some extra Norwegian :)
I cannot wait! My tree will probably be a mess with half the tree not completed, weak skills and new lessons scattered throughout the portion I have already done but I do not mind because it all means I get to learn more Norwegian!
Tree 2.0 has gone live today!
Happy posts all over my stream seem confirmation enough.
Really excited and looking forward to it ! Learning Norwegian is so much fun, and I admire the Norwegian Duolingo team so much ♥ You guys are doing an amazing work, thank you ♥
From 75, the new tree just expanded to 114 sets of skills in total (!). I counted the new skills, there are 39 NEW of them. I was at 37 done with 38 skills remaining, now I have 77 remaining, so probably at least 2 more months of new practice for me. Lots of stuff, so thanks a lot to the Norsk Duolingo creation team. Takk !!
You will probably have time to finish before the testing is over, but if you don't you will have to finish the new and altered skills in the new tree before completing it. Old and unaltered skills in the new tree will stay completed.
Yes, when they gave us the new German tree, a lot of my skills stayed golden and completed. You will not have to redo the tedious things you already know.
You would only have to finish the new/altered skills in order to complete the tree again.
Thanks a lot mate. I really appreciate it. The Tree v.1.0 has 75 tasks and was already big. Hopefully, the Tree v.2.0 will be equally amazing
Not yet, but likely within a matter of days.
Update: It's now being A/B tested on new users.
Great idea! : ) Thank you, I guess we'll all be able to learn double Northwegian . . . or more Northwegial (Bokmal). Thanks!!!!!! : D
after a brief testing period
Any idea how long this will be? I'm aware you can't say that exactly, but is it a matter of days/weeks/months?
I'm still in the first part of the tree and think about waiting (just keeping up with the things I've learned) until the new one is available to me.
Most likely a couple of months, but there is no set time frame for the testing. The tree is tested until they have statistically significant data showing that it's either better or worse than the old tree.
As far as I've gathered, these are the stages of testing:
- Internal verification (this is a technical test, and does not measure learning)
- A/B test with new users.
- Larger A/B test, also bringing in old users.
I would get started on the old tree instead of waiting. The beginning of the tree is not where we've made the most significant changes, so you will keep most of your progress.
"Most likely a couple of months" more than a month ago. Does that mean that I should hopefully be FINALLY getting this tree sometime in the next month? waits hopefully
There are different phases, actually.
- the development of tree 2.0 was finished
- the alpha testing was done
- the A/B test for new learners of Norwegian was done
- that A/B for all users is currently running (since 19 April)
If I remember correctly, A/B for new users went on for about three or four weeks. And it's been two weeks since the second round of A/B testing started.
I'm ready for the upgrade :) http://shrani.si/f/2Q/V6/9beQvZ3/duolingoseier.jpg
YAY!!! I haven't gotten very far in Norwegian, Level 1... But I'm super excited!!! It will just be a better experience!
Congratulations and of course just as excited as everybody to step into the new course ! Having said that, I think I will get more result from studying more regularly than I manage to do recently than by hoping that a new tree will simply do the trick.....
With the pace I am in now, the new tree will definitely overtake me .... have to run !
I would run very fast indeed!
The new tree holds ominous skills like Emergency, Illness, Absence and Destiny - so its imminent arrival is not to be taken lightly.
Destiny sounds intriguing .... wondering what 'cat' sentences have made it to that chapter....
Great news! I still have a few skills to finish the tree. I am looking forward to the new tree!
What is the max vocabulary a course can have? Do you all plan to continue updating the course with more vocabulary or does duolingo eventually limit the amount a course can hold?
We've not been given any upper limit by Duo, though I'm sure there's a technical limit of sorts.
I will however say that I think the Duolingo format is made for beginner/intermediary courses, so there's a limit to how advanced we should try to make the course as long as we're working within that format. At some point students should start reading proper texts rather than sentences without context, and they should start producing their own sentences, both written and spoken, to a larger extent than what Duolingo currently asks them to.
So yes, we will continue to update and optimise the course, but no, they likely won't be such big updates as tree 2.0 represents. If changes are made to the Duolingo format to make it better facilitate advanced learning, then we'll happily make a course to match. :)
Thanks in advance for all of your hard work. Can't wait to see the new version when it is ready :)
Tusen takk crew for your effort to make the course even more awesome. Very probably this is an already considered improvement for the v2, but I'm hoping to see a 'Words' section like the one found in other courses. God dag
wonderful ! well done! .............................. will there be a swedish tree 2.0 ?
noice!..smort!!! :) any particular time for that?... i mean the exact time of its being online?
There's no E.T.A., but from what I can see from spying on their tree in the incubator I think it's going to be a while still.
I am just saying as a crazy linguist and norsk lover with a lot of time on my hands. I would like to throw my name into the pot as a tester. Please and Thank you for your consideration.
Testers for the A/B test are randomly chosen, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! :)
Thanks. I'd just love to get the opp. How do you like Swedish? It seems interesting to me as a next undertaking.
Swedish is great, as is the Swedish tree. You'll probably find yourself flying though it if you finish Norwegian first, as the two languages are so closely related.
Just out of curiosity, because I'm wondering how other languages compare, what are some general differences?
How will I know if I have access to it? Is there a special link?
no, you will just have new skills together with old ones. If old skills have new lessons, you will just have them on 4/5 or 2/3 with extra lessons to finish.
but i see that below you say that you are new, how can you know if you have a new tree or an old one? :P
