Shouldn't 'journals' also be accepted?

    'Journal' is not usually used to translate «зо́шит», at least it's not in the dictionaries.

    Would generic "notes" be an acceptable translation for зошити here?

    Зошит means a notebook. "A note" would be записка(something you would leave on the fridge to remind yourself to buy eggs)or конспект(whatever you wrote in your зошит in the classroom). Hope it makes sense.
