What happened to my thread?
I made a thread earlier in the German discussion area about 'Das ist vs Es ist' and it seems to have been deleted. Can a mod please tell me why? It no longer appears in the German discussion area and when I go to the link, nothing is there.
Hi Zach, It is hard for us to tell why and when the thread was deleted. Do you remember when it was posted and a little more about the content? It's possible that your question pointed out a bug which was then fixed. In such cases the threads get deleted to avoid clutter. In most cases Duolingo does not treat "das" and "es" interchangeably, but there are exceptions such as idioms and phrases where the difference is not big enough to penalize the mix up. Hope that helps a little :)
Danke für die Antwort myra (I learned that from Duolingo!). My thread was posted 11 hours ago and I last replied to it 10 hours ago. I can see a little bit of the exact message from my stream which reads as follows "According to a multiple choice question I just answered, "das ist" can mean "it is". Before, I thought only "es ist" could mean "it is"..." To paraphrase the rest of the thread though, I was basically just asking people when to use "das ist" over "es ist" to mean "it is".
I later posted a reply to someone which included a screenshot "I don't have the link to the discussion, but I did take a screenshot. http://i.imgur.com/phprONM.png"
I assumed "das ist" meaning "it is" wasn't an error on Duolingo's part because I have seen "das" mean tons of different things, which is why I didn't report the sentence as containing an error, but I made the thread just to find out when to use it over "es ist".
Not relevant to your original question: are you happy with mint? I have all sorts of problems, so I am moving back to debian, with cinnamon.
I'm definitely happy with Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon. I'm not a power user though, so I can't say I would have much to complain about anyway besides usability and aesthetics.
I love Ubuntu too. Despite what a lot of people say, I think Unity looks awesome. Eventually, if the desktop portion of SteamOS gets a lot better, I will probably end up switching to it. Hopefully by that time though SteamOS will be using a better DE. Of course I could just download my own DE, but for SteamOS' sake, I really hope they change it.
Disclaimer: I'm a huge Valve fanboy.
I am a Debian (stable) user since the early days of "potato" and "sarge", but wifi didn't work with debian on my new laptop, so I tried Mint. Wifi worked fine, but there are some other issues that I couldn't (or i didn't want to invest the time to) solve. Now I am back to debian with a custom kernel (to bypass the wifi problem) and I also "borrowed" cinamon from Mint, because I like it better that the other DE...
I know that it exist. I haven't tried it yet. I was using Olivia with Cinnamon. I will try sometime over the weekend the new release, and the mint-debian, and I will compare with my current installation.
