I'm not sure why this keeps getting repeated. The hurdle for typing diacritical characters is no worse than Spanish, Portuguese, and German (from my experience).

This meme is for the one on these boards who says you can't make captions on images in Esperanto. Let's not waste any more type spreading misinformation. The mega thread has info for adding keyboards and such. Let's move past this and use the language to communicate.

It's because poor Ĥ is so often ostracized. Evil K tries to mob it out of the language.

"Ĉeĥa ĥoro en Ĥinio kantas muzikon de Baĥo en la ĥorejo kun eĥo kaj la ĥemiistoj faras ĥemion." There's all the ĥ I could possibly think of.

"A Czech chorus in China sings music by Bach in the choir hall with echo and the chemists do chemistry"

Ĉu la ĥorestro estas ĥirurgo aŭ arĥitekto? Ĉu li loĝas sur arĥaika arĥipelago?

(Replacements: koruso; Ĉinio; korusejo; kemiistoj; kemion; korusestro; kirurgo; ark-.)

Oddly enough, I thought ekoo existed but apparently eĥo is still safe for now, as is Ĉeĥ-.

Heheh, lovely. No wonder why ĥ has been disappearing.

Besides, if eo was full of ĥ it would probably sound more like Arabic or Dutch. Such a strong character ĥ is!

I'm sure that typing the diacritical characters is easy for any competent computer user. For me, I have read all of the comments on the mega thread and have downloaded the fixes several times. There is still some step that I am missing because none of them work when I go to type. I don't know how to get them into my computer once I have them downloaded. I'm still not able to understand the process. I'm old though so I didn't grow up with computers.

I'm not saying diacriticals are the easiest thing to achieve, just that it's no harder for Esperanto characters than German. The easiest way is to use the Chrome browser and add the Anstatauxi extension. It automatically turns jx into ĵ and so on. If you need help you can ask in my stream. In no way did I mean for this to be discouraging. It need not be a hurdle.

Would it be a problem if I just left out the diacritics altogether or are there any pair of words which can only be distinguished by the diacritics? I own a Portuguese keyboard that also happens to work surprisingly well for Spanish, English and French, but it's of no use when it comes to Esperanto. In short, I'm kind of lazy to change the settings of my computer and my mobile just to practise only this one language and having to revert back to default as soon as I finish.

Leaving out eo diacritics is not really an option because of what you said: muso: mouse, muŝo: fly, iĝi: to become, igi: to make [someone] [something].

That said, x-system is just fine. Duolingo, vortaro.net and some other sites accept that format.

By the way, that was exactly how I thought in the beginning, but as soon as I realized that I would keep using the language persistently I added those letters to my keyboard. So I recommend you to try to get by using x system for a while and if you come to a point where you foresee that you will use Esperanto more than a few days you can add those letters. For me it was completely worth the effort.

Ah, sorry, I just didn't think of explaining it because I blindly presumed that you knew because the grammar notes on the very first eo lesson on Duolingo explains it. I constantly forget that those notes are not made available to mobile users by Duolingo, which is inexplicable. https://www.duolingo.com/skill/eo/Basics-1

Grammar notes? O.o Well, I certainly didn't know about that either. I hardly ever use Duolingo on my PC and it's a shame that these grammar notes you speak of are not made available to mobile users. I guess I'll have to constantly remind myself to go back to the previous lessons on my computer and check them again to see if I had missed anything important. Thanks for telling me about them.

Hey Dan.

Please don't talk down to us. The diacritics for German, Spanish, and French can be achieved with simple keyboard shortcuts, without the need of any new keyboards or extensions. And I would like to find similar keyboard shortcuts for the Esperanto characters, but there don't seem to be any. The x shortcut may (or may not - I haven't gotten that far yet) work on Duo, but it does not work where I am taking my own notes.

Any help with finding simple keyboard shortcuts for the Esperanto characters would be MUCH appreciated! For a Mac desktop! Thanks!

I wasn't talking down to you. Please don't read condescension that isn't there. Two years ago when I posted this there was much complaining about the diacritics. This was plea to move past complaining and start using the language.

The mega thread has all the information you need.
