I put "We should refrain from drinking wine" - why was this wrong?

Literally you are right, but refrain is seldom used in everyday speech outside limited circles while 'beidio â/ag' is normal everyday colloquial Welsh, so 'we should not' gives a better feel of how it is used.

does 'ag' always come after beidio? Is it necessary? Could one say 'bedio yfed gwin'?

See the course notes for 'Commands'. The â/ag after peidio is optional in informal Welsh.

To find the course notes generally, go to https://forum.duolingo.com/topic/924/hot and see 'Course tips and notes'. The 'duome' link there is useful for browsing all the notes in one place. We recommend reading the notes for each new section as you start it.
