why are we learning tirer? I feel like I will rarely ever use this verb.

"tirer" means "to shoot" in this sentence, but it also means "to pull" ("tirer la porte" = "to pull the door"), or to "draw from" ("tirer une conclusion" = "to draw a conclusion from").
