Why do my friend and I have different appearances/themes?
One of my friends recently started using Duolingo. However, he said that he wasn't able to see my skill tree progress on my profile page. Apparently, while both myself and my other friends see this when they look at my profile http://i.imgur.com/khAcdru.png , He sees this http://i.imgur.com/IAzSCxy.png .
Does anyone know why his theme is so different? I can’t seem to find any information about different appearances/themes for duolingo.
His layout is still being beta-tested, and is still missing some features such as the Vocabulary section, bonus lessons, and the ability to give lingots to other users.
As of now, only new users (for the most part) have that layout, but when testing is done, the site will look like that for everyone.
The above screen shot is the first time I've seen the old format, but I think the old layout looks better. I know there are features they haven't added into the beta format, but I really wish I had access to them (and I don't even know what they all are) and I feel it is a bit cumbersome to use and not very intuitive. Maybe it will get better, though. I'll try to be optimistic.
I just signed up a couple of days ago and I have the new layout. I was reading the forums and wondering why I didn't have features that others had until I read about the new theme being tested and figured that that is what I had. I hope the other features will be added when they are ready. I would really like to be able to see a vocabulary list! And this is the first I've heard about bonus lessons, which I also want now!
Don't worry. Duolingo has made lots and lots of changes since they started. It can at times be frustrating with all of the changes, but in the end, they've always made Duolingo better. And, Duolingo is very responsive when a change does not work.
Since you just started, if you really dislike your set-up, just create a new account until you get the different set-up. I would rather encourage you to stick with the version of Duolingo you already have as your experience will help Duolingo improve, but it is your choice.
And, as I said, from my own prior experience, I have no doubt that your version of Duolingo, once the bugs are all ironed out, will be sent out to all of the other Duolingo users.
Duolingo is only a little over a year old. So, the program changes quickly.
