Connaître is 'to know someone'. You can't say 'I know (something)' with 'Je connais'. You have to say 'Je sais.'

I read this entire thing and about halfway through, the word 'Know' stopped looking like a real word. It's a good thing you wrote the translation or I probably would just never believe that 'Sais' was a real word. Now I'll just fail English class.

In French there are two verbs (savoir and connaître) which translates in English to the verb "to know": I was confused about the usage and checked out the sites frenchtoday.com and about.com , the former giving a clear and crisp explanation.

http://www.frenchtoday.com/blog/savoir-versus-connaitre-the-verb-to-know-in-french

http://french.about.com/od/grammar/a/savoirconnaitre.htm

Key takeaway for remembering usage is that "connaître is always followed by a NOUN – it cannot be followed by anything else."

Why "que" instead of "ce"?

Because "ce" is used to present something like, "That is" or "That girl."

Mais ils ne savent pas que nous savons qu'ils savent que nous savons. Et aussi: ils ne savent pas que vous savez que nous savons qu'il ne savent pas que nous savons qu'ils savent que nous savons.

I'm having way too much fun with this. And yes, the second sentence still make sense, if you have the time to work it out with paper and pens in three different colors, and maybe a flow chart.

How can I verbally distinguish vous savez and vous avez?

https://www.duolingo.com/RoughlyHewn

One elides the s into a "z" sound when the s touches the vowel. The other s is unvoiced. Same as "ils sont" vs "ils ont".

"Vou savez" = vous savez "Vou (z)avez" = vous avez

"Il sont" = ils sont "Il (z)ont" = ils ont
